I LOVE crochet towel toppers and I have designed 30 (!) different crochet towel toppers over the last several years. So many different towel toppers for all year round!
Towel toppers are a functional and decorative item for your kitchen. The towel hangs from the decorative topper giving your hands easy towel access. No need to open up drawers with wet or dirty hands if you have a towel hanging nearby. You can hang your towel topper from a drawer or oven handle for easy access.
I grew up with crochet kitchen towel toppers being a staple in my mother’s kitchen. At that time in the 70’s, the topper part was usually crocheted right into the top of the towel so the hand towel couldn’t be removed from the topper. Which meant each time you washed your towel you also washed the topper portion as well. The topper would then get those little bits of fabric pilling from frequent washing. And the towel would usually wear out before the topper but it was so hard to throw out that handmade topper!
For the majority of my crochet towel topper designs I utilize a hidden 3″ plastic craft ring. This allows the towel to be removable for easy washing. No more washing the towel and the topper together!
This hidden 3″ plastic ring* is available for purchase from Amazon* but you can substitute with inexpensive plastic shower rings, wood rings or even elastic hair ties. All have been used successfully by other makers.

Most of these towel toppers use beginner friendly stitches starting with a base of single crochet or double crochet stitches. For many of my towel toppers I have a complete tutorial on how to make a perfect circle in single crochet which will help you make the base of several of these towel toppers!
These towel topper designs are a great way to add a little bit of fun to your own kitchen. I have designs for every season of the year as well as a few that are season neutral for year round display.
These crochet towel topper patterns are a great way to use up your scrap yarn basket, too! And, you can use either cotton or acrylic worsted weight yarn for your towel holders. Since your towel topper is removable from the holder you won’t need to wash your towel topper with your towel!
