This Crochet Animal Blanket is a free year-long crochet a long (CAL) event by Nana’s Crafty Home!
Let’s embark on a Wild Animal Crochet Adventure: A Year of Wild Animal Crochet Squares – 12 unique and adorable wild animal crochet squares designed by Nana’s Crafty Home!
I am so thrilled to announce the launch of a year-long crochet-a-long event that promises to weave together our love for crochet and the wonders of the wild.
Each month, I will unveil a new, exclusive granny square pattern, inspired by the world of wild animals. This fun event will be great for any skill level – from beginner to advanced!
I have several squares in the works beginning with one of my favorite wild animals – the Panda! The Panda crochet Square is available as a free crochet pattern.! Be sure to bookmark this page as I will update this post once each square is released.
This mystery crochet a long will be perfect for a quick and easy-to-complete project every month and at the end of the year you will have an adorable and stunning blanket!
Crochet Animal Blanket CAL Details
You may already be familiar with the style of this large square from my three previous designs – the Christmas Granny Square Blanket, the Easter Granny Square Blanket and the Fall Squares Blanket. Each large square begins with several rounds of double crochet stitches worked as a circle. The circles are worked with standard increases throughout just offsetting the increases so you end up with a perfect round circle.
The circle is then “squared” off to make joining easier. Each individual square ends up with an approximate measurement of 14″ x 14″. Perfect for pillows, too!
I will be designing a total of 12 squares which is 3 more than my previous blankets. My previous blankets measure approximately 48″ x 48″ including border so I anticipate that a blanket with 4 rows of 3 squares will end up at approximately 48″ wide x 60″ in height. This is just a guess at this point as the final measurements will depend on the join method and the border width.
I will release each crochet square as free patterns individually on the blog. I will update this post with links to the free pattern as the individual squares are released so be sure to bookmark this page! Every month of the year a new square will be released. These are the squares currently in the works:
February square: Tiger Square is now available as a free pattern: https://nanascraftyhome.com/crochet-tiger-square-wildlife-animal-square/
March square: Koala
The remaining months will be a surprise and I have so many ideas – and requests from you! So many possibilities! Elephant, Lion, Gorilla, Hippo, Rhino, Sloth, Monkey, Panther, and so many more! Do you have any ideas or requests?
Each square uses approximately 2.0 oz or 106 yards for the face or circle portion of the square plus 1.5 oz or 80 yards for the squared off portion. If you want to get started on making the first squares you will need the following:
Panda: Face = White / Square = Frosty Green
Tiger: Face = Carrot / Square = Frosty Green
Koala: Face = Light Gray / Square = Frosty Green
Giraffe: Face = Cornmeal / Square = Frosty Green
Because of the large size of these squares there will be so many possibilities and variations in sizes! If you wanted to make a crochet baby blanket, you could make a Safari themed 4-square blanket for baby’s nursery which would end up at around 30″ x 30″. So you could mix and match the squares with your favorite animals for your perfect blanket! Pair your baby blanket with a matching amigurumi toy to complete a set!
Once the squares are complete each square will have simple applique pieces to sew to the front of the square – eyes, nose, muzzle, ears, cheeks. Basically all the bits that make that animal unique. These appliques are going to be fairly easy and would be a great way to jump into the applique crochet world!
I will be using some size variations of my cartoon Crochet Eyes for these squares. These are the same crochet eyes I have used for my previous blankets and I just love how much personality they add! I have a complete photo and video tutorial for the crochet eyes to help you make them as well.
My Wild Animal Blanket uses Red Heart Super Saver* which is a medium worsted weight acrylic yarn. Very economical and with plentiful color options! You can certainly substitute your favorite worsted weight yarn – Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn!, Red Heart With Love, Paintbox Simply Aran, Vanna’s Choice, Big Twist Value, Caron Simply Soft, Caron One Pound and so many more! Raid your yarn stash – even mix and match.

What is a Crochet a Long? A Crochet a Long is basically a group of people working on the same project at the same time and at the same pace with parts of the pattern being released over a specific time frame. However, if you come across this project later you can absolutely work on this blanket any time as the pattern will remain free on the blog! This is a very informal crochet a long event – a go at your own pace, use your own yarn, make the squares you like kind of project! I love to see your work and you can share your photos and progress in my Facebook group which is a great place to hang out with fellow crocheters!
Each square for this crochet animal blanket will be available to purchase as an ad-free PDF for a small fee. Once the blanket is complete you will be able to purchase all the squares together + joining & border instructions once all the squares are released.
