I finally have my Christmas Crochet Blanket all together and with a border I think you will love!

I am so in love with this crochet Christmas blanket!  Every square is unique, different and so much fun.  I really still cannot pick my favorite!  I would think I have my favorite one nailed down and then the next one would come along.

This blanket never fails to put a smile on my face each time I see it. Each square is so cute and happy! This blanket brings me such joy and I hope it brings joy to you and those you may gift it to. 😊. I think young and old alike will fall in love with this Christmas blanket and cherish it for years to come.

This Christmas Crochet Blanket is so customizable.  Any combination of squares would make an adorable Christmas afghan.  All snowmen, all gingerbread men, Santa and reindeer – mix and match these squares for your perfect Christmas crochet blanket.

What a fun gift this would make or add to your own holiday Christmas decor this year. I am hoping I have time to put together a pillow with one of these squares to match the blanket – I think it would be just adorable. The trick will be picking which square or squares would make the pillow cut. I may have to draw a lottery 😂.

Christmas Crochet Blanket Pattern Details

The great thing about granny square blankets is that you can make any size you want.  More squares = larger blanket!  Using all 9 of my squares plus a simple border I ended up with a square blanket of 46″ x 46″.  A decent sized throw for the back of your sofa or for a child’s blanket.

I used the Braided Slip Stitch Join method for joining my 9 squares together in a contrasting color.  Joining with this stitch in red really frames each square beautifully and provided a lovely and interesting texture as well.  I have a complete photo and video tutorial for this fabulous join technique on the blog.

If you would rather have an invisible flat join for your squares you can check out my Mattress Stitch join which is a sewn join.

Once I had my squares together I had to decide on a border.  Oh how I agonized over getting the border just right on this blanket.  I wanted something that screamed “Christmas” to me.  My go-to Christmas border has been the Candy Cane Border which I used for my Gnome for Christmas blanket, the Night Before Christmas Throw as well as the Joy Christmas Tree Advent Calendar.  I really wanted something different that would still feel Christmas-y.

I ended up using a combination of V-stitches and double crochets to create a ric rac appearance which has such a unique look to it!  Simple, beginner-friendly stitches combine for a fun and easy border.  I have the complete video tutorial for this beautiful border below or you can also find it on YouTube.  Subscribe to my YouTube Channel to get notified whenever I post a new video

I used Red Heart With Love* yarn which is a medium weight #4 acrylic worsted weight yarn for the majority of the squares and border.  I also used Red Heart Super Saver for the green color used in the Elf and  Bernat Pipsqueak yarn for Santa’s beard and Mrs. Claus’ sweater.  This pattern is a great way to use up your stash, too!

If you were to make the blanket with all 9 squares and the same border the total yardage is listed below for the entire blanket:

Joining Instructions

Assemble the 9 squares in the desired placement.  Placement for mine is as follows:

Christmas Granny Square diagram

Join squares by columns then by rows.

Place your squares RS facing up.

With Red on your hook and working in Square 1, insert the hook into the chain of the corner sp next to the first stitch of the side you are joining from the RS of your square to the WS, yarn over and pull through for your first sl st.

Now working in Square 2, insert your hook into the chain stitch closest to the stitch on the side you are joining from the RS to the WS, yarn over and pull through to complete a sl st.

Continue working a slip stitch in top of each stitch along sides of both squares 1 & 2 back and forth between squares to opposite corner space.

At the corner space, sl st in the first chain of the corner in Square 1 and then work a sl st in the chain stitch of Square 2.

With RS of Squares 3 & 4 facing up, sl st in the chain st closest to the stitch on the side you are joining from Square 3 and then in the chain stitch closest to the last stitch you worked on Square 4.

Continue working a sl st in top of each stitch along sides of both Squares 3 and 4 to corner space.  Repeat steps to join squares 5 & 6.

At the last corner spaces of squares 5 & 6, sl st in the first chain of the corner of Square 5 and then work a sl st in the chain stitch of Square 6, chain 1.

Fasten off.

Now join Squares 2 & 7, Squares 4 & 8 and then Squares 6 & 9 together in same manner.

Once all columns are joined you will now join the rows.

Begin working slip stitch join for Squares 7 & 8 to first corner.  At the corner, sl st in the chain st closest to the stitch on the side you are joining from Square 7 and then insert your hook in the chain stitch closest to the last stitch you worked on Square 8 and under the join from the columns that joined squares 2, 7, 4 & 8, yarn over and pull through to complete the slip stitch.

Begin slip stitch join in chain stitches of squares 2 & 4 through both sides of each square to next corner.  Repeat corner instructions for squares 2, 4, 1 and 3.  Continue to end.  Fasten off.

Repeat same steps for next row of squares beginning with squares 8 & 9 working through squares 4 & 6 and then squares 3 & 5.

Fasten off.  Weave in ends.

Thank you so much Gerrie – so happy you like the blanket! He did win his football game but the weather was so terrible we didn’t make it 🥶 Thankfully it was televised! So far it looks like better weather for his next game so we should be able to go cheer him on in person 😊. Have a wonderful weekend 💕🌸 Tonya
