Woo Hoo – finally finished my Easter Granny Square throw! So excited to share the final blanket with border and joining instructions.  I am hoping that I got these final instructions out to you early enough so you can finish your fun blanket before Easter.

And, if you are just getting started with your blanket – have fun!  So many of you are making this as an adorable baby gift which can be given year round as well.  And, I know that some are taking individual squares and making a variety of different projects.

I love seeing your work and I would so enjoy seeing your projects!

Crochet Easter Blanket Details

This Easter Blanket is made up of a total of 9 squares. There are 8 unique squares provided for this blanket.  The 9th square is another Happy Flower Square in different colors.

If you missed the free crochet patterns for the Bunny Granny Square, Hatching Chick Granny SquareLamb Granny SquareSun SquareHappy Sun Square,  Easter Basket squareBunny’s Bottom squareBaby Chick Square or the Happy Flower Square you can find them all on the blog.

I used the Single Crochet Joining Method for joining my squares together and I love how the ridges of single crochet really frame each square. Really in keeping with the patchwork look I was originally going for. However, you could also use the Braided Slip Stitch Join which is another easy join method which is flat but has interesting texture. If you would like an invisible flat seam you could also sew them together with the Mattress Stitch.

The majority of the border is the Granny Block Stitch. Using white for each single crochet round of the border really tied the joining and border together. I also decided to do one round of each of the main colors in the squares which gave the blanket the perfect finishing touch. I have a complete photo and video tutorial for the Granny Block Stitch Border as well to help you out.

The last round of the border is a simple shell stitch. I love the simplicity of it!

After completing the border my blanket ended with a finished size of 48″ x 48″. You could work fewer rounds if you would like a smaller blanket. This blanket ended up being pretty hefty given its size. Many of the squares had added embellishments, appliqués or stitches worked into the front of the unworked front loops of several squares. I used quite a bit of yarn for this blanket which makes it a fantastic stash busting project!

I primarily used Red Heart With Love* yarn for my squares.  Red Heart With Love yarn is a medium weight #4 acrylic worsted weight yarn.  I did add in some Red Heart Super Saver for colors I couldn’t find.  However, these granny squares would be a great way to use up your stash, too!

Before joining you will need to make a second flower square in order to have a total of 9 squares.  Flower #2 is the same pattern as the original Flower Square with colors changed for the flower petals and for the squared off portion of the square.  Otherwise the colors and pattern are the same.  Colors used as follows:

Rounds 10 – 13:  Bubblegum (pink)

Flower petals: Violet (purple ombre)

Joining Instructions

Assemble the 9 squares in the desired placement.  Placement for mine is as follows.  The number on each square indicates the order of joining.

Join squares by rows then by columns.

Place your squares RS facing up.

With white on your hook, join white into the ch-2 corner sp of top right corner of square 1, insert your hook into the ch-2 sp of square 1 and square 2 and complete a sc,

Continue working a sc under both loops of both squares in top of stitches along sides of both squares 1 & 2 to opposite corner space.

At the corner space, sc in the ch-2 corner space in both squares.

With RS of Squares 3 & 4 facing up, sc in the ch-2 corner sp of both squares.

Continue working a sc in top of each stitch along sides of both Squares 3 and 4 to corner space.  Repeat steps to join squares 5 & 6.

At the last corner spaces of squares 5 & 6, sc in the last ch-2 space through both squares.

Fasten off.

Now join Squares 2 & 7, Squares 4 & 8 and then Squares 6 & 9 together in same manner.

Once all rows are joined you will now join the columns.

Begin working sc join for Squares 7 & 8 to first corner.  At the corner, sc in the ch-2 sp of both Squares 7 & 8.  Working over the previous join, sc in the ch-2 sp of both Squares 2 & 4. Begin sc join through both sides of each square to next corner.  Repeat corner instructions for squares 2, 4, 1 and 3.  Continue to end.  Fasten off.

Repeat same steps for next column of squares beginning with squares 8 & 9 working through squares 4 & 6 and then squares 3 & 5.

Fasten off.  Weave in ends.
