This Sun Granny Square is a free crochet pattern by Nana’s Crafty Home!
This crochet sun granny square is granny square #4 in my Easter spring Granny Square Blanket series. This happy sun will brighten your day!
If you missed the free crochet pattern for the Bunny Granny Square, Chick Granny Square or the Lamb Granny Square you can find them all on the blog. Square #5 is a fun Easter Basket square that will be releasing in just a few days so be sure to check back for that one.
The great thing about the squares for this spring themed blanket is that they are so versatile. Mix and match the squares for your own perfect spring blanket. The sun could be adapted easily to a flower as well – just change up the colors for the center and the petals!
The Sun Granny Square is another great square for beginners as well!
Sun Granny Square Pattern Details
I am working this crochet sun pattern from the same base pattern as my Christmas crochet granny squares. All of the squares in this series work up to a large 14″ square. Perfect for pillows or to mix-and-match for an adorable Easter spring themed throw! These individual squares would also make wonderful wall hangings for your spring themed home decor.
The sun begins with rounds of dc stitches in yellow yarn. The final round of the sun and the first round after the sun is completed will be worked in the back loop only. The unused front loops will be used to crochet the sun’s rays!
The stitch I used for the rays is a variation of the stitches I used for the Hatching Chick square. You will be working 3 dc + picot + 3 dc all worked in the same stitch. In between these stitches you will only skip 1 stitch before working a sc stitch.
The sun’s smile is worked as surface slip stitches between rounds 4 and 5 of the granny square base. If you haven’t seen this technique before I have a complete photo tutorial on my Gingerbread Man Square which should help out.
I am using Red Heart With Love* yarn for my squares. Red Heart With Love yarn is a medium weight #4 acrylic worsted weight yarn. These granny squares would be a great way to use up your stash, too! I ended up using Red Heart Super Saver for the bright orange color which is the same yarn I used for the Hatching Chick’s beak. So bold and bright!
