The Peppermint Candy Man is so much fun! I was starting to run out of ideas for Christmas faces and then I thought that I could transform a peppermint candy into a fun face, too!  Then, of course, after I designed him I started thinking of all kinds of things I could turn into a cute face.  However, I knew I had to stop somewhere – maybe I can add some more matching squares next Christmas!

This free crochet Peppermint Candy Christmas granny square pattern is a fun square that would make a cute Christmas blanket with my other squares or even on its own.  Mix and match the squares for your perfect Christmas granny square blanket!  Would look great with or without the face and leg details for a giant peppermint afghan.

Peppermint Crochet Blanket Granny Square Pattern Details

The granny squares for this series of Christmas granny square patterns work up to a square 14″ large motif.  Perfect for pillows or to mix-and-match for an adorable winter Christmas-themed throw!  These squares would also make wonderful wall hangings for Christmas decoration.  What a cute peppermint pillow this square would make!

This free crochet peppermint motif granny square pattern starts out as a circle using double crochet stitches and then the circle is squared off so you can easily join and sew squares together.

The color changes are going to be a little different from my previous squares.  You will be basically working 8 color changes in red and white evenly in each round. I decided to carry colors as I worked this square so as to have fewer ends to weave in at the end.  And peppermint candies can be different colors, too!  I personally love the bright colors of red and white but green and white or even green and red would be great options as well.

This square is going to give your color work skills a work out.  For you beginners, you may find it helpful to practice carrying yarn and keeping your tension throughout the project.

You will be working the eyes, legs and wrappers all separately and then sew the pieces to the front of the square.  The candy wrappers are cinched together at one end and the cinched end is sewn to the side of the face.  The legs are worked in the round, stuffed, sewn shut and then are sewn to the bottom of the face.

I played around a little bit with the placement for the wrappers. I ultimately decided to place them like arms. Makes me want to hug and squeeze him and call him George. 😉

The smile is worked as a surface slip stitch across several stitches.  You can see me work this same technique on my Gingerbread Man Square on Instagram if you would like to see that in action.

I am using a Red Heart With Love* yarn which is a medium weight #4 acrylic worsted weight yarn.  This pattern is a great way to use up your stash, too!
