Crochet Christmas Tree Stand Details
The Crochet Christmas Tree Stand is a beginner friendly pattern made with bulky yarn so it works up quickly – great for last minute decor or gift ideas!
Last year I saw so many different Christmas tree stands in the craft stores and I knew a crochet one would be even better – I could customize it just the way I wanted.
These trees are completely customizable for size and use. Worked from the top of the tree down so you can easily change up the size by adjusting the number of rows to make the tree smaller or larger. Use a smaller weight yarn to easily make the tree smaller. You can even make these into cute little crochet Christmas tree ornaments, too!
Customize the decorations – embroider stars, add decorative buttons or you can even leave as a simple undecorated tree. So many different options! Every tree can be different. A great way to use up small amounts of yarn and easily coordinate to your holiday decorating color scheme.
If you choose to make these as Christmas tree stands, you will need a few tools to complete the project. I found the perfect rustic birch coaster rounds at Michaels* as well a wooden craft dowel for the tree trunk. You will need a drill bit and power drill to drill a hole in the coaster for the dowel. (Or have your handy hubby do it for you like I did) You will also need a hand saw to cut your dowel to length. Be creative on the your stand – there are small wood plaques or blocks that would also work just fine as the base for your tree.
I wanted to match the color scheme of my Luxe Boho Christmas Stocking that I released as a free crochet pattern last year. And since I decorate my tree with cream and gold, the colors are just perfect.
I used Lion Brand’s Color Made Easy which unfortunately is now discontinued. But you could easily substitute any bulky weight yarn to achieve a similar result.
I found a box of assorted faux pearl buttons at Amazon* that paired up beautifully with my color scheme and add a nice elegant touch to my finished trees.

If you would like to make these as Christmas ornaments you would just need to adjust the number of rows worked. For the tree ornament shown below, I worked 18 rows in the pattern. Add buttons, bows, embroider stars or leave unadorned for a simple yet pretty addition to your tree. I used a cinnamon stick for the tree trunk which also provides a lovely Christmasy smell! Add a simple yarn loop and hang from your tree – so quick and easy!
You can also adjust the height of your tree trunk by adding length to your dowel before inserting into the tree. The dowel needs to equal the height of your panel + height of your base + desired length of trunk.

Prepare & Assemble Tree Stand
Drill hole in the center of your wood stand with drill bit and power drill. With hand saw, cut wood dowel to length. The length of the dowel should equal the height of the tree panel + 2” for the tree trunk + length of wood stand. My dowel measures 10” (7 1/2” tree panel + 2” tree trunk + 1/2” stand). My drill bit and dowels are both the same size which makes a nice fit without glue. However, if the size of your hole ends up slightly larger than your dowel, you may need to use glue to stabilize your dowel. Insert dowel into hole of stand, stabilize with glue if necessary. Hold the dowel straight while glue dries.
Joining Tree Panels
To join panels together you will be single crocheting the panels together leaving two stitches open at the bottom to insert the wood dowel. With WS of panels together, with Color A on hook and working through both panels, skip first 11 sts of row 27, join with a slip stitch in st 12, ch 1, 1 sc in next 9 sts to corner, work 2 sc sts in corner. Now working along outside edge of panels, evenly space single crochet stitches along outside edge, working 2 sc sts each corner. After you have worked the last corner, stuff the inside of your tree. Once stuffed, sc in next 9 sts of the bottom panels, leaving 2 sts left unworked.
Fasten off.
Assemble Tree
Insert assembled wood dowel into base of tree panels where the stitches are unworked. Use ends to sew stitches together around the base of the tree around the dowel.
Weave in ends.
