Several years ago I designed the Gnome for Christmas C2C Blanket which is still very popular. I think it is time to add a summer version so you can add to your year-round Gnome blanket collection!

I designed summer gnome crochet blanket several years ago for my granddaughter Nina who so loved my original Christmas Gnome blanket, but after she passed away a few years ago I put it aside.

Recently I started looking at some of my older not-yet-released c2c patterns and it reminded me of how much she loved gnomes. I finally felt like it was time to finish and enjoy it. I know she would love how this gnome crochet blanket turned out and I am excited to display it in my office. It is such a sweet blanket and it will remind me of her happy little girl giggles. 💕

This gnome crochet design was inspired by the gnome garden we have in our backyard. Every year I add little elements to it – another little house, a few more gnome figures, a bridge or mushrooms. Our gnome families share their home with several little fairies as well! The kids are constantly rearranging the little figures and they have such a good time playing gnome.

If you would prefer a smaller scene to hang on your wall or as table decor, I have a tutorial for how to change C2C graphs to single crochet tapestry as well.

I would classify this design as an intermediate c2c design as there are a lot of color changes throughout. If you are new to c2c I would recommend starting out with a smaller and easier project to get some practice before tackling. The Flower C2C Scrubby dishcloth is the perfect introduction to working a color graph in c2c and a great way to practice changing colors.

If you are a c2c newbie and want to work a project without any color changes first, I recommend my Spring Caron C2C Blanket which is the perfect beginner project!

My finished gnome crochet blanket including border using the half double crochet c2c stitch ended up at approximately 41″ x 41″ square. To make your blanket larger I would recommend working your blanket in the double crochet c2c stitch.

For the border I designed a mini mushroom stitch border. It took several tries before I was satisfied with the final border but it really makes me happy when I see it all together! The bright red mushrooms in combination with the yellow shell stitches really make the border pop!

Pattern Instructions

Starting: Ch 4, hdc in third ch from hook and last ch (skipped chs counts as ch-2 sp).

Increase Block: Same as starting block, then sl st to ch-2 sp of next block.

Continuing Block: Ch 2, work 2 hdc in same ch-2 sp as sl st, sl st to ch-2 sp of next block.

Decrease: Sl st in top 2 sts of last block worked on previous row, sl st in ch-2 sp of same block and finish continuing blocks, stop working continuing blocks once you have reached the sl st edge.

Border Notes: When changing colors you will drop unused color, pull in new color as indicated in pattern and work over the unused color – do not fasten off.

Round 1: With light blue, sc evenly around outside edge of blanket, work 3 sc sts in each corner, sl st to first st.

Note: I worked approximately 140 sc stitches across each side + 3 sc sts in each corner.

Round 2: Join white with sl st to next st (middle sc of corner) and carry light blue, ch 2, [*pc, switch to light blue, dc in next 6 sts, switch to white,* repeat from * to * to next corner, pc in corner (middle sc st)] around to end, omitting final corner, sl st to first st with red.

Fasten off white.

Round 3: With red (carry blue), ch 3, 4 dc in same st, *switch to blue, sk next st, sc in next 4 sts, switch to red, sk next st, 5 dc in next st,* repeat from * to * around to end, switch to red with sl st to first st. 

Round 4: With red (carry blue), ch 2, dc4tog, ch 1, *switch to blue, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, switch to red, dc5tog, ch 1,* repeat from * to * around to end, sl st to first st.

Fasten off red.

Round 5: Ch 1, 3 sc sts in same st, *sc in each st to next corner (including ch-1 sps from previous round), 3 sc sts in corner st,* repeat from * to * to end, omitting final corner, sl st to first st.

Fasten off blue.

Round 6: Join yellow to middle sc st of any corner, ch 3, 4 dc in same st, [*sk next st, sc in next st, sk next st, 5 dc in next st,* repeat from * to * to corner, 5 dc in corner st] around to end, omitting final corner, sl st to first st.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.
