Owl C2C Sack Hat

After designing the Owl C2C Scarf I just knew I had to design the matching hat. So cute and quick to make, this hat and matching scarf would make perfect gifts for any owl lover.

And, if you need help in learning how to make a C2C Crochet Rectangle shape I have a complete photo and video tutorial for you that will show you how to decrease on one side while continuing to increase on the other!

I used the Double Crochet C2C technique and I ended up with a finished hat size of 10” wide x 7 1/2” tall (20″ head circumference). This size is perfect for teens and adults. If you made this hat in the mini (hdc) c2c crochet technique it would be smaller and great size for babies 7 1/2” wide (15” circumference) x 6” tall. You could change up hook sizes using either the double crochet or mini hdc techniques to get various hat sizes.

I used Caron Simply Soft yarn* from Yarnspirations for this project as I just love how soft it is without any scratchiness – perfect for wearing. I also love the gentle soft sheen in this yarn.

I am providing two different graphs. My first version matches more closely the scarf which defines the “horns” of the owl. However, I worked the 2nd version by just using 1 color for the main body with color changes only for the eyes and beak. Because it is a sack hat style it naturally defines the top corners of the hat. So, you decide which one you want to use!

Because there is not an even # of pixel squares on each side of the owl eyes, be sure to fold so that the eyes are even on the front of the hat before sewing.

The little fringe tassels on the top corners of the hat add just the right amount of fun whimsy!

Once graph is complete, with RS facing up, fold ends of hat together.  With a long length of Color T, whip stitch edges of hat together.  Begin at bottom edge of hat and work up to the top edge.  Note:  Because there are an uneven # of pixel blocks on the sides of the hat, before sewing top edge of hat together be sure the eyes are centered on the front of the hat.  Take another length of yarn and whip stitch top seam of hat from one corner to the other.

Tassel Fringe:

Cut 4 strands of each color of yarn approximately 7” – 8” long for a total of 20 strands of yarn per fringe, attach to scarf as fringe at top of each owl on both sides of hat.
