These crochet Christmas baubles are striking and modern – the perfect addition to your tree!

The holiday season always brings out my love for handmade decorations, and this year, I’m completely obsessed with the Mosaic Medley Bauble! This little crocheted ornament combines the cozy charm of yarn with the eye-catching beauty of a simple yet stunning crochet stitch.

A round, plush bauble bursting with festive color, all woven together in a hypnotic circle pattern that practically glows on the tree. It’s sophisticated enough to impress, yet beginner-friendly once you get the hang of the simple repeat.

Whether you’re stash-busting scrap yarn, making a set as thoughtful gifts, or starting a new family tradition of adding one special ornament each year, the Mosaic Medley Bauble is the perfect little project to get those holiday hooks flying.

How to Make the Crochet Christmas Baubles

1. These Christmas ornaments are made with the Interlocking Arches Stitch which is the same stitch I used for the very popular Mosaic Medley Pot Holder pattern and the Mosaic Medley Pumpkin patterns. I have a complete photo and video tutorial for the Interlocking Arches Stitch.

2. There is no need to fasten off when changing colors as the yarn “floats” from the color changes will be hidden inside your crochet Christmas baubles – simply drop and pick up the yarn as indicated in the pattern. Which means no additional ends to weave in!

3. You could replace the starting chain 3 with a Stacked Single Crochet (trust me, it’s prettier!). I have a step-by-step photo and video tutorial ready for you. Once you make the Stacked SC, just add a chain 2 or chain 1 depending on the round you are working and then continue crocheting as written.

3. You will make 2 identical panels which are seamed together with a slip stitch join and then “stuffed” with a plastic round ornament! Or, alternatively you could stuff with a poly fil stuffing as well.

4. I am adding a ribbon for hanging my ornament but you could simply use the hanging loop that comes with the ornament or replace with twine for a more rustic look.

If you need some extra help making your baubles, I have a complete video tutorial to help!

I hope you enjoy making these Mosaic Medley Baubles and I can’t wait to see yours – be sure to share on social media with a tag @nanascraftyhome or send me an email at tonya@nanascraftyhome.com so I can see all of your unique and beautiful ornaments!

These crochet Christmas baubles are absolute scrap-yarn superheroes! My favorite combo is one solid color paired with a variegated or self-striping yarn that has short color runs — the stitch pattern turns those quick color changes into pure magic!

For the baubles you see in the photos, I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn! in solid Ivory with the gorgeous variegated Japanese Fields colorway. Those soft, muted greens and rosy pinks feel unexpectedly festive and totally dreamy together—my new favorite Christmas combo!

My secret to that perfect circle? Clear plastic disc ornaments from Amazon. I love how modern and minimalist they feel compared to regular round baubles – the finished ornament looks like something you’d find in a boutique! These are completely optional and you could easily stuff with fiber fill or purchase round baubles which can be found at any big craft store like Michaels or Hobby Lobby! Usually they will come in a pack of multiples making it very inexpensive to make a quantity of handmade baubles.

If you choose to stuff with poly fiber fil without the plastic ornament you will need to add a hanging loop with either ribbon or yarn.

Pattern Notes:

  • Worked from the center-out.
  • Worked in non-turning, joined rounds.
  • Chain 3 at beginning of a round counts as first dc throughout.
  • Do not fasten off yarn when pulling in a new color. Drop yarn and then pull back in with slip stitch to change colors.

Pattern Instructions

With Color A, make MC (or alternatively, ch 4, sl st to form a ring).

Round 1: Ch 1, 12 sc in MC, join with sl st in first st and tighten ring. (12)

Round 2: Ch 5 (counts as first st + ch-2), sk next st, *dc in next st, ch 2, sk next st,* repeat from * to * around to end, sl st in first st (ch-3 of beg ch-5). (6 dc sts + 6 ch-2 sps)

Round 3: Drop color A and pull in color B with ch 1, 1 sc in same st, *working behind ch-1 sp work 3 dc sts in skipped st from previous round, 1 sc in next dc of previous round,* repeat from * to * to last st, 3 dc in last st, sl st in first st. (24)

Round 4: Drop color B and pull in color A, ch 4 (counts as first st + ch-1), sk next st, *dc in next st, ch 1, sk next st,* repeat from * to * to end, sl st in top of first st. (12 dc sts + 12 ch-1 sps)

Round 5: Drop color A and pull in color B with ch 1, 1 sc in same st, *working behind ch-1 sp work 2 dc sts in skipped st from previous round, 1 sc in next st,* repeat from * to * to last st, 2 dc in last st, sl st in first st (ch-3 of beg ch-4). (36)

Round 6: Repeat round 4.

Round 7: Repeat round 5.

Fasten off and weave in remaining ends.

Repeat above instructions for second panel do not fasten off CC, weave in remaining ends.

This method uses a surface slip stitch seam to join the panels. The plastic ornament is inserted midway through the joining process.

  1. Prepare the panels: Hold the two panels with wrong sides (WS) facing each other, aligning the outer edges and matching stitches.
  2. Begin the seam: Insert your hook into the contrast color (CC) loop left at the end of the second panel.
  3. Work the surface slip stitch:
    • Insert the hook from front to back through the back loop only (BLO) of the corresponding stitch on the front panel.
    • Then, insert the hook from front to back through the BLO of the matching stitch on the back panel (you’ll be working through both panels simultaneously).
    • Yarn over and pull this loop through both back loops as well as the loop on already on your hook (3 loops) to complete the slip stitch.
Tip: The slip stitches will form a visible chain-like seam on the RS of the work.
  4. Continue seaming: Repeat Step 3 until opening is just small enough to fit ornament.
  5. Insert the ornament: When the opening between the panels is just small enough to snugly fit the plastic ornament, pause seaming. Carefully slide the plastic ornament into the pocket formed by the panels.
  6. Finish seaming: Resume the surface slip stitches around the remaining edge, enclosing the ornament completely.

Fasten off and weave in remaining ends.

Your ornament is now ready to hang—attach a ribbon or hook through the ornament’s top loop for display!
