Bulky Crochet Hat Pattern from a Rectangle

Oct 30, 2024 | Crochet patterns

A quick and easy bulky crochet hat pattern that is perfect for keeping warm all winter long!

This simple crochet hat is made from a rectangle using a crochet stitch that looks like knit. This easy crochet hat uses just one easy stitch to create an interesting knit-like texture.

If you love warm, cozy and chunky crochet hats this one would be perfect. Great for everyone in the family – so easy to customize to any size!

Cozy up this winter with the Cherish Bulky Crochet Hat! This pattern is perfect for adventurous beginners. Made from a simple rectangle, the hat works up quickly using a soft, bulky yarn, ensuring you stay warm in style. The classic ribbed texture and trendy faux fur pom-pom add a touch of elegance, making it a must-have accessory for chilly days.

How to Make This Bulky Crochet Hat Pattern

For the full written pattern instructions for bulky crochet Cherish Hat scroll down below. The ad-free PDF is available for the Cherish Hat in my shop. The ad-free PDF is also available for FREE to my Lifetime Members as well!

1. This hat is made from a rectangle worked side-to-side so foundation chain can be adjusted to any height.

2. To adjust height, add or subtract foundation chains according to gauge. Choose starting chain for folded brim or no brim to begin.

3. Begin working double stitches in each chain. The double slip stitch is worked with a yarn over (as if you were to make a double crochet stitch), insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch and all loops on hook. Essentially working a slip stitch with an extra yarn over.

5. Your stitch placement will be a bit different for this pattern as well. After turning for row 2 you will work your double sl st into the bottom front loop below the top two loops you would normally work your stitch.

I have a complete stitch tutorial to help you with this stitch as well!

6. Work the same repeating row to length desired. This length is for the width of your hat.

7. Once you have worked to size desired, fasten off leaving a long tail for seaming the ends together and cinching the top of the hat closed.

8. Fold the ends together and with the long yarn end on your tapestry needle, seam the ends together.

9. Once the seam is complete, make a knot with your yarn so you won’t pull the seam when you pull to cinch the top of the hat closed. I also have a tutorial for how to cinch the top of a hat closed.

10. Cinch the hat closed, weave in ends and add a pom pom if desired.

I hope you enjoy making the Cherish Hat!

Crochet Cancer Challenge

The Cherish Hat is part of the 2024 Crochet Cancer Challenge Hosted by Sweet Potato 3. This is my fifth year submitting a design for this challenge and it is very dear to my heart. You can find my other designs for previous years on the blog – the Marci Hat Tunisian Hat, Nina Bean Beanie, Remember Me Puff Stitch Beanie and the Tunisian Swirl Hat.

Our sweet little granddaughter Nina was diagnosed with brain cancer in June 2021 and passed away in December that same year at the age of 7.

So many kids are diagnosed with brain cancer with little hope for life-saving treatment. It breaks my heart that these little ones suffer so much and their families grieve their loss so desperately.

That time after diagnosis is so difficult in every way that it becomes difficult to process everything especially knowing that time may most likely be very limited. I am so glad we spent so much time with her in those last months making memories. We have so many beautiful memories to cherish.

I am using Lion Brand’s Basic Stitch Thick & Quick yarn* which is a bulky weight #5 yarn. I love the worsted weight Basic Stitch yarn and I was very excited to see the Basic Stitch Thick and Quick when I designed the Posh Panache Bucket Hat last winter. I had another couple of skeins left over from that project and since it is so soft I knew it would be perfect for this hat as well! The best part is that it is anti-microbial and anti-allergen making it a lovely choice for my cancer challenge design! Unfortunately this yarn is now discontinued so I am currently recommending Lion Brand’s Hue + Me with tons of color options!

Hello. I just wanted to tell you about my husband, Bob. He had been in the Navy then was a Merchant Marine for 35. Years. He got cancer after he returned from the Gulf War. May 1, 2002, he had brain surgery for the tumors. He passed away on May 31,2002.
This beanie reminds me of his watch caps. THANK YOU. I will make several and donate.
