When I designed the Bewitching Braids Cape I fell in love with the easy yet beautiful stitch pattern and so a series of patterns have been born. Bewitching Braids Bag coming soon!

I just love Lion Brand’s Wool-Ease Thick and Quick yarn**. And this yarn is super bulky so any project you make with it is going to work up quickly. This is a one hour bulky crochet beanie! And, if you use one color for the hat you only need 1 ball of yarn — score!

I made my first one to match the Bewitching Braids Cape but I just had to see how it would work up in just one color — so glad I did! Which one is your favorite?

Perfect for the beginning crocheter — even those that have never done cables before. Below you will find I have provided a video tutorial for the Bewitching Braids Cape and it will help you with this pattern. It is worked the same way — just changing up the beginning chain number. I did make an adjustment to this pattern to make the size of the hole at the beginning a little smaller. Instead of chaining 3, ch 2 and dc in same st at beginning of each round. Easy, peasy!

The pattern instructions provided are for an adult sized hat. However, it is very easy to change up the size by adjusting your beginning chain amount in multiples of 6.

If you make the hat in just 1 color you would only need 1 ball of yarn. And the hat is fairly slouchy so if you would like the hat a little more fitted just leave off that last row.

1 Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Fishermen 53 yd/3 oz (Color A)
1 Wool-Ease Thick & Quick  Charcoal 53 yd/3 oz (Color B)
Size L (8.0 mm) crochet hook
Tapestry Needle
Scissors
1 Faux Fur Pom Pom
Handmade Folding Genuine Leather Labels

Approximate finished size: 8” tall x 8” wide lying flat at brim

Gauge: 8 dc st = 4”, 5 rows = 4”

Abbreviations:

ch = chain
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
dc = double crochet
sk = skip
st = stitch
FPtr = front post treble crochet (see special stitches section below)
yo = yarn over

Pattern Notes:

  • Ch 2 at beginning of each round does not count as stitch.
  • 2nd FPtr of each “braid” is worked behind the first FPtr of the “braid”.
  • Pattern is worked from bottom up.
  • Pattern is sized to teen/adult size.  To resize pattern, add/subtract chains for beginning round in multiples of 6.
  • If you would like to make this hat in one color (rather than two) you would only need 1 skein of yarn in color desired.  However, I did use all of 1 skein so if your gauge is slightly off you may need slightly more.  Hat is pretty slouchy as well, so you could leave off last row and hat would be a little more fitted to head.

Special stitches:

FPtr:  When you work front post stitches, you will be working around the dc post from the previous row inserting your hook from the front of your work to the back.  If you are right handed, you will be working right to left across the row, and you will insert your hook into the right side of the post that you want to work around, and then back up on its left side.

Stitch instructions:  yo the hook 2 times, insert hook from the front of the indicated post stitch from previous round, around the post to the front of the post, yo, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through remaining 2 loops to complete the stitch.

With Color A, chain 42, sl st to first ch to form a ring.

Round 1: ch 2 (does not count as st), dc in same st and in each st around, sl st top of 1st dc st.  (42 )

Round 2:  ch 2, dc in same st, *sk next st, FPtr in next st, FPtr in sk st being sure to work stitch behind previous FPtr worked, dc in next 4 st after the two FPtr,* repeat between * * to last 3 st, dc in last 3 st, sl st top of 1st dc st.  (42)

Round 3:  ch 2, dc in same st, *sk next st, FPtr in next st (worked around FPtr post from previous row), FPtr in sk st (work around FPtr post from previous row and behind FPtr just made), dc in next 4 st after the two FPtr, *repeat between * * to last 3 st, dc in last 3 st, sl st top of 1st dc st.  (42)

Round 4 – 5: repeat round 3 with Color A.  At the end of round 5, switch to Color B.

Round 5 – 10: With Color B, repeat round 3.

Leaving a long tail for sewing hat shut, fasten off.  Sew top of hat shut.  Sew faux fur pom pom at top of hat, if desired.
