Ah, the crochet granny square bucket hat – a blend of nostalgia and contemporary style and a modern twist on a classic. This hat features a granny square with a twist in a blend of white and gray tones, offering a look that’s both understated and stylish.

It’s a versatile piece that can easily accompany you on a casual day out or add a touch of vintage to a more dressed-up look. Pair it with an everyday outfit for an effortlessly cool vibe, or make it the standout accessory. This granny square bucket hat is ready to be a go-to in your winter wardrobe, offering fun versatility.

This crochet granny square bucket hat is very simple and quick to make using bulky yarn. Very easy to customize to size simply by changing up the hook size!

Granny Square Bucket Hat Pattern Details

This easy granny square bucket hat starts out with three identical granny squares made with cluster and V-stitches made in contrasting colors. A nice mix of texture and color work!

Once you have made the squares, the crown or top of the hat is crocheted separately in seamless rounds of single crochet. You can check out my photo and video tutorial for how to make a perfect circle in single crochet for a visual aid.

Once the squares and crown are made you will join your squares to form a ring. For the join I am using a faux fur yarn for a beautiful contrast in textures but you could simply use the yarn used for the squares instead if you prefer. This is a new-sew hat – all joins are made with single crochet stitches!

Then you will join the crown of the hat to the ring of squares using the same method as joining the squares with the fur yarn.

For the brim of the hat you will start with one round of single crochet stitches with the fur yarn as trim around the bottom of the granny square ring working each stitch in the front loop of each stitch and chain.

Once the trim is added you will begin working the brim with your main color in the unused back loops of each stitch and chain behind the faux fur trim of the previous round. Once you have worked several single crochet rounds for the brim you will finish with a final trim of the faux fur yarn!

The yarn I am using for this granny square bucket hat is Lion Brand’s Basic Stitch Thick and Quick* which is a weight 5 yarn that is also anti-microbial! This was my first time working with this bulky weight yarn and I loved it so much! I have a hard time finding bulky yarns with a sufficient amount of softness and color options and I am so happy I came across this option!

I paired it with Lion Brand’s Go For Faux Fur yarn which is so lush and soft! And the colors paired beautifully together.  So happy with how my hat turned out using this combination!
