Crochet Penguin Blanket Pattern Details

Several years ago I released the Polar Bear & Penguin Pals c2c throw which is one of my most popular c2c designs. I think the adorable penguins played a large role in that pattern’s popularity so I decided to make another design featuring penguins all by themselves. These fun penguins are having a blast skating the winter away!

This crochet penguin blanket pattern ended up at approximately 39″ x 39″ after completing the border. You could easily make this blanket larger by using the standard dc c2c technique. I love using the mini hdc crochet stitch for the majority of new new designs because the “holes” or gaps created with this technique are smaller and less visible than in the double crochet c2c stitch.

For the border I wanted something simple yet with a Christmas-y winter feel so I landed on a dc cluster stitch. Very easy and quick, too! Just the right finishing touch for my crochet penguin blanket.

Starting & Increase Block: Ch 4, hdc in third ch from hook and last ch (skipped chs counts as ch-2 sp).

Continuing block: Sl st to ch-2 sp of next block, ch 2, work 2 hdc in same ch-2 sp as sl st.

Decrease: Sl st in top 2 sts of last block worked on previous row, sl st in ch-2 sp of next block and finish continuing blocks, stop working continuing blocks once you have reached the sl st edge.

Fasten off blue.

Round 1: Join red to middle sc st of any corner with sl st, (ch 1, 2dcCL, ch 2, 2dcCL) in same st, [*sk next 2 sts, (2dcCL, ch 1, 2dcCL) in next st,* repeat from * to * to next corner, (2dcCL, ch 2, 2dcCL) in corner] around to end, omitting final corner, sl st to first st.

Fasten off red.

Round 2: Join white to any ch-2 corner sp with sl st, (ch 1, 2dcCL, ch 2, 2dcCL) in same sp, [*sk next 2 sts, (2dcCL, ch 1, 2dcCL) in next ch-1 sp,* repeat from * to * to next corner, (2dcCL, ch 2, 2dcCL) in corner] around to end, omitting final corner, sl st to first st.

Fasten off white.

Round 3: Join blue to any ch-2 corner sp with sl st and repeat round 2 except work (2dcCL, ch 1, 2dcCL, ch 2, 2dcCL, ch 1, 2dcCL) in each corner space.
