Once I completed the Marjorie Pocket Scarf I knew that these stitches would look fantastic in a hat and wanted to share that design with you as well. And I had just enough of Lion Brand’s Basic Stitch Premium* to make it in the same gorgeous colors!

This hat is worked flat row by row creating a rectangle which is then folded and seamed together. Easily customized to size – just work less or more rows to reach desired size.

Pattern Notes:

  • Ch 3 at beginning of each row does count as a stitch.
  • To adjust height of hat, chain foundation chain in multiples of 4.
  • I used a Chainless Starting Double Crochet Stitch in place of the beginning chain 3 of row.
  • Stitch count remains the same throughout unless otherwise indicated.
  • Hat is worked flat row by row in a rectangle and then seamed together.

Fasten off leaving a long tail approximately 40” long for sewing.  Weave in  remaining ends.

Lay rectangle flat with RS facing out, fold ends of rectangle together, whip st edges of hat together by working in back loops of last row and unused loop from foundation chain.

Marjorie Hat sewing side seam close

After seaming the side of the hat, make a simple knot at top of hat before closing top of hat. This will prevent side seam from bunching when pulling top of hat closed. With same length of yarn, weave needle between ch 3 of each row and pull top of hat closed. Sew any remaining hole shut. I have a compete photo & video tutorial for sewing the top of a hat closed.

Attach pom pom, if desired. Weave in remaining ends.

With RS facing, attach Color A to bottom edge of hat with sl st.

Row 1:  ch 1, sc evenly around edge of hat, sl st to 1st st.

Fasten off.  Weave in ends.

Lovely textured hat! I crochet hats, scarves, headbands, lap blankets, and capelets for charity organizations and for nursing homes. The next hat I make will be this hat. And when I finish the current lap blanket, I’m going to make your Spring Rhapsody blanket, but in a slightly smaller size than you offer, as I’m intending it for someone in a wheelchair. I think the bright colors and the varied textures, especially the raised stitches, will bring cheer to the recipient. Thank you very much for offering free patterns; those of us who crochet and knit for charity greatly appreciate this.

What a wonderful way to give back to the community and I am so grateful I can play a small role in your gifting. 😊 What a wonderful idea for the Spring Rhapsody Blanket – yes, those varied textures make it the perfect blanket for that purpose. Enjoy and happy crocheting ❤️
