The Marjorie Pocket Scarf was originally released as a Crochet a Long (CAL) in 3 parts.  What is a Crochet a Long? A Crochet a Long is basically a group of people working on the same project at the same time and at the same pace with parts of the pattern being released over a specific time frame. However, if you come across this project later you can absolutely work on this scarf any time as the pattern will remain free on the blog!

This crochet pocket scarf is a delightful exploration of textures, featuring a mix of raised popcorn stitches and the elegant diamond waffle stitch. The combination of stitches creates a visually appealing pattern that’s equally satisfying to touch.

The fringe adds a touch of playfulness to your style. As you move, the fringe sways gently, infusing a sense of movement into your look.

But the real charm lies in the discreet pocket seamlessly integrated into the scarf. This functional detail adds practicality, giving you a convenient spot to stash small essentials like keys, a pocketbook or phone. Embrace functional fashion with the Marjorie Pocket Scarf!

Marjorie Crochet Pocket Scarf Inspiration

My journey into designing stitch sampler style patterns started with the Autumn Rhapsody Blanket over a year ago and last spring I added the Spring Rhapsody Blanket.

I originally intended on designing a winter themed blanket to release this December as a crochet a long.  Then 2020 happened – and what can I say?  I lost my crojo a little bit this summer and really struggled to finish anything.  No project sounded great and I just wandered a little bit through my yarn.  A little aimless and seemingly without direction….can anyone else relate or was it just me?

Well, I started to feel a bit better but there just wasn’t enough time left to devote to a large blanket project.  I was visiting with one of amazing testers (and friend 💕) Sandi and she mentioned the idea of a pocket scarf.  Everyone seems to be making them and I am seeing different variations and themes all over Facebook and Pinterest so it seemed like a great idea!  However, I wanted my design to look unique and different and be a little bit of a stitch sampler style.

Sadly, in the midst of designing the scarf my amazing mother-in-law Marjorie passed away unexpectedly.  It was such a blow to our family and we feel her loss deeply.  She had an amazing heart – always willing to lend an ear to listen, hand to help, or shoulder to cry on.  Whatever was needed she provided.

She and I had a lot in common as she loved to crochet and she made so many amazing lace doilies, tablecloths and table runners.  I am so grateful I have a few of her hand made creations to treasure.

She was so supportive and excited for me as I started my crochet blog and business.

And as I was struggling to find a name for my new design I realized I needed to name this scarf after her.  She would have loved this design and worn it with pride.  I will treasure this scarf and will always be reminded of her when I wear it.

The Yarn

I chose Lion Brand’s Basic Stitch Premium* for this scarf as I just love the stitch definition and it really is soft and cozy! I chose the neutral color Cream as the base with Saffron and Garnet for the contrasting colors.  This color combo looks so rich and luxurious – a perfect Christmas treat! The Basic Stitch Premium is now discontinued however Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling is the perfect substitute with many different colors to choose from.

I also think this scarf would look fabulous in just one or two colors – still so much amazing texture!

The Design

I consider this a stitch sampler style pattern meaning I am using several different textured stitches throughout the pattern.  For the scarf I am only using 3 different stitches to create this particular design.  And I will have photo & video tutorials for these stitches so you can feel confident in tackling this pattern. And remember to subscribe to my YouTube Channel so you never miss a new video.
