I promised I would post a monthly pattern featuring the Caron Cupcakes after I did the Alpine Ridges Hat in October.  Sometimes I feel that time doesn’t just slip away — it runs away!  I can’t believe we are only a month away from Christmas!

The Caron Cupcakes* are designed with hats in mind as it comes complete with its own coordinating pom pom.  It is a self-striping cake but the stripes are in much smaller runs in order to give the same effect as the larger Caron Cakes but for smaller projects.

The Cupcakes are also a smaller weight yarn — a 3.  Since I am more of a fan of heavier hats (they are supposed to keep me warm, after all!) my patterns have been utilizing stitch patterns that will bulk up the hat a little bit.

In fact, I think this hat is almost a little bit more about the stitch than about the hat itself.  I love it!  I can’t stop thinking of projects I can use it for.  I guarantee that this will not be the last time you see it featured at Nana’s Crafty Home!  I have been searching for the name of this stitch everywhere and I can’t seem to find it.  Someone has to have used it at some time however so if anyone has a better name for it let me know!  I am calling it a modified dropped double crochet stitch as it is a row of filet crochet and the second row comes back and fills in the unused stitch from the previous row.  In a dropped double crochet pattern you enclose the chain 1 and double crochet around the chain.  In my pattern you double crochet in front of the chain 1.  This bumps out the double crochet just the smallest bit giving the piece a wonderful texture.  If you have any questions about the stitch I have included a video tutorial for you below.

I wanted to give this Cupcake hat a little bit more of an interesting look rather than the straight forward self-striping so I worked this pattern using both ends of the cupcake alternating rows and carrying the yarn throughout the pattern.  You can tell by the above picture that at a certain point in your pattern you will have the colors in the cake meet up.  If you would like to keep the contrasting you could certainly make that happen by forcing your color changes.  I just let my cake go with the flow and it gave the hat a much different appearance.

For this pattern I did a foundation row of half double crochets.  I like this in hats as it is stretchier than a chain foundation row.  However, if you want to do a chain row and just get to the pattern you could certainly start with an even number of chains, join to the beginning ch with a slip stitch to work in the round, ch 4, sk 1 ch, dc in the next ch, ch 1, sk 1 ch, dc in the next to the end of the round and then continue the pattern on.

I also love the “wrong side” of this stitch.  I honestly love it so much that this hat could certainly be made as reversible.  However, I would recommend cutting your yarn and not carrying it as the yarn carry would be very noticeable on the rows of filet as you are carrying it up a chain 3.  I know that is quite a bit of weaving in ends for most of us but for a small project like this I don’t think it would be too terrible.  The look of the inside is so pretty it would certainly be worth it!

Just Peachy Hat pattern featuring Caron Cupcakes!

The pattern as written fits an adult size head but can be easily reworked to fit anyone.  Just start with an even number of chains or foundation stitches to begin.  Easy peasy!  This hat can be worn as a slouchy hat or pull the brim of the hat up for a non-slouchy hat….highlight the inside I say!

Materials needed:

Caron Cupcake Mango Tango 244 yds / 3 oz

Size G (4 mm) crochet hook

Tapestry needle

Notes about pattern:

Pattern is used working with yarn from both ends of the cupcake alternating the colors for each row.

The yarn is dropped at the end of each round and switched to the other yarn end at the beginning of the next round effectively “carrying” the yarn without fastening off at the end of each round.

Pattern as worked fits adult but can be reworked to fit any size.  This stitch requires an even amount of stitches at the beginning so adjust your foundation accordingly.

RS = right side
fhdc = foundation half double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
st = stitch
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
sk = skip
sc = single crochet

With 1st strand of yarn from cupcake

Round 1 (RS) fhdc 74.  Without twisting, sl st into 1st st.  (74)

Round 2 ch 4 (counts as first dc + ch 1) sk next st, *dc in next st, ch 1, sk next st* repeat between * * to end of round, sl st in top of ch 3.

Switch to second strand of yarn of cupcake

Round 3 ch 1, sc in same st, dc in skipped st from previous row (place dc in front of the ch 1 from previous row) *sc in next st (top of dc post from previous row), dc in skipped st from previous row* repeat between * * to end of round, sl st into 1st st.  (70)

Repeat rounds 2-3 alternating strand 1 and 2 until you have just enough yarn left over to sew top of hat closed and do a round of reverse single crochet on the bottom edge of the hat.

Fasten off, weave top of hat together with long tail and sew together.  Attach pom pom.

With RS facing, attach desired strand of yarn to bottom edge of hat, ch 1, reverse single crochet around edge, sl st to first st.

Fasten off.

Weave in ends.
