Easter baskets have been a big part of the Easter tradition in our family. We so looked forward to waking up on Easter morning to find our basket filled with goodies and special treats! I knew some families that would hide the baskets for the kids to hunt in the morning.
Now that we have grandchildren we have an Easter egg hunt in the back yard on Easter. The plastic eggs are filled with all of the goodies and treats and they use their basket for placing the eggs they find. Since we have such a wide range of ages, I started having an assigned color for every child so we could hide the eggs according to age. For the older kids we hid their eggs in more difficult places than the small ones. Since they had their own color they could only pick up their own color. Once they had found all of theirs they could help the little ones. It works out so well!
Easter Basket Tradition
I always find it fascinating to research the historical traditions behind our customs. One such tradition, deeply rooted in early medieval Catholic customs, involves the blessing of baskets at Easter. Historically, after the long fast of Lent, baskets brimming with delicious items would be brought to the church, where a priest would bestow a blessing upon them. These foods would then be taken home to be eaten for Easter breakfast.
This beautiful tradition is kept alive in the church to this day. On Easter morning, the children bring their baskets to the church for Father to bless. It is so sweet to see the little ones with their baskets of treats on Easter morning!
