Crochet Sampler Blanket for Winter!

Jan 3, 2025 | Crochet patterns

A crochet sampler blanket perfect for a Winter’s Night crochet! The Winter’s Night Rhapsody Stitch Sampler Blanket is a free crochet pattern for a stitch sampler style throw that will brighten the long winter days!

My love for crochet stitch sampler blankets began many years ago.  My first crochet stitch sampler design released on the blog was the Autumn Rhapsody Blanket which has been loved by so many and featured on the cover of Crochet Magazine!

And my last crochet sampler afghan – the Spring Rhapsody Blanket – was released over 4 years ago! I have had several requests for a Christmas themed stitch sampler which I hope to have time for this year; but in the meantime, Bizzy Crochet has the gorgeous Fireside Stitch Sampler as a free crochet pattern!

I took inspiration for this crochet sampler blanket from all the things that make me think of a cold winter’s night.  Shades of blue with soft fluffy white snow and starry skies!

I hope you will enjoy working on your winter themed blanket pattern and learn some new crochet stitches along the way.

How to Make the Crochet Sampler Blanket for Winter

For the full written pattern instructions for this Crochet Sampler Blanket for Winter, scroll down below. You can purchase the ad-free PDF of Winter’s Night Rhapsody for a small fee. Or, become a Lifetime Member and never pay for a PDF again!

1. The Winter’s Night Rhapsody Blanket is made from the bottom-up with several different stitches used throughout the pattern. I have photo and video tutorials for each special stitch highlighted in this winter themed throw!

2.. There are a couple of brand NEW stitches designed for this throw – the Snowflakes and the Star Stitch! These stitches are both worked into the blanket – now sewing skills necessary for these stitches!

3. I love tapestry crochet colorwork and one of my favorite parts of this crochet sampler blanket are the tapestry snowflake and star sections! I have a Tapestry Tutorial to get you started if you have never worked tapestry color work in the past.

If you wanted to make this a snowflake blanket you could repeat the Snowflake stitch in place of the Star Stitch and replace the tapestry stars with another snowflake section as well. And vice versa – make a bright and cheerful star blanket without the snowflakes!

  • sc2tog = single crochet 2 stitches together (see special stitches section below

Special stitches:

dc4tog: yo, insert hook into specified stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2, *yo, insert hook into same st, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2,* repeat from * to * 2 more times; yo, pull through all 5 loops on hook.

dc5tog: yo, insert hook into specified stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2, *yo, insert hook into same st, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2,* repeat from * to * 3 more times, yo, pull through all 6 loops on hook.

mpc (mini popcorn): 3 sc sts in same st, drop loop from hook, insert hook into top of first sc made, place dropped loop on hook and pull loop through st.

Pattern Notes:

  • Ch 3 at beginning of each row counts as stitch.
  • I used a stacked sc stitch as an alternative ch 3 turning chain.
  • Stitch count will remain the same throughout unless otherwise noted.

Pattern Notes for Rows 47 – 67 & Rows 71 – 91:

  • Rows are worked in single crochet stitches in the tapestry crochet color work technique.
  • At the end of each row, turn and ch 1.  Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Written row by row instructions follow; full-color graph at end of PDF.
  • Since all sts are sc, the pattern is written telling you which color to use and how many stitches of that color. For Example: “[A1, C9] eleven times” means you will work with color A for 1 sc st, then color C for 9 sc sts, and work that pattern 11 times total across the row.
