This unique hat is made sideways, seamed and then cinched at the top for an easy to make hat!

The unique “swirl” appearance is created by making a parallelogram shape – once the two ends are folded together you end up with a really fun swirl!

How do you make a parallelogram shape in crochet you ask? So easy – simply by working increases on one side of your work and decreases on the other. It may sound complicated but trust me – it really is easier than it sounds!

The Fiesta Slouchy Swirl Beanie is the perfect match to the Fiesta Swirl Ribbed Crochet Scarf – another free crochet pattern on the blog!

If you love the “swirl” appearance of the Fiesta slouchy hat, check out the Tunisian Swirl Hat which is worked with the same method but in Tunisian crochet!

How to make the Crochet Slouchy Beanie

I am using simple, beginner single crochet stitches for my Fiesta Ribbed Hat. We are working those single crochet stitches into the back loop only which creates beautiful ribbed texture throughout.

1.This easy slouchy beanie is made sideways as a parallelogram shape. Start with a foundation chain which can be adjusted to any height. No stitch multiples with this stitch pattern!

2. After that first row of single crochet in the foundation chain we will begin working increases and decreases on the same sides of the hat as we work. Increases are simply working an extra single crochet into the first stitch of the row, at the end of that row leave the final stitch of the row unworked – that is the decrease. Which means the stitch count for each row will remain the same throughout the hat.

3.The next row will be working a row of single crochet stitches without an increase or decrease – again keeping the stitch count the same. Then repeat those two rows until you have the width desired.

A little note about measuring width – since you have a parallelogram shape you will want to measure along the bottom or the top edges – not in the middle! If you measure in the middle of your parallelogram it will not be an accurate measurement once it is folded.

It will be very easy to adjust size for your hat – simply add or subtract rows to adjust width and add or subtract foundation chains in any number to adjust height. I love it when stitch multiples don’t matter!

Another little note about sizing – because this hat is ribbed it is very stretchy so it should fit a range of sizes easily as well.

4.Once width is achieved fasten off leaving a long tail for seaming & cinching, fold the ends together, seam and cinch the top of the hat closed.

I am using Lion Brand Landscapes Renewed* yarn for this hat pattern. It is a medium weight polyester with some recycled polyester fiber. It is so very soft! A real delight to work with! However, you could easily substitute most medium worsted weight yarn.

I love the soft ombre striping of the Landscapes Renewed yarn as well – since the stripes are short it worked perfectly for a hat! I used most of one skein for the large size with not a lot left over. And you could certainly add any “extra” to your infinity scarf. No leftover bits – yay!

Pattern Notes:

  • Hat is worked side to side as a parallelogram in rows and then seamed together at the end.
  • Stitch counts are listed according to size small (medium, large).
  • Resizing: To adjust height, add or subtract foundation chains according to gauge. To adjust width, make more or fewer rows.  You can also resize by using a larger or smaller crochet hook.
  • Increases are on same side of hat. Place a stitch marker in first st of increase side of hat as a visual reminder of which side to increase.
  • Note that when measuring for width you will need to measure along either long edge or after folding short edges together.

Pattern Instructions

Ch 40 (45, 50)

Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each across. Turn. 39 (44, 49)

Row 2: Ch 1, working in BLO through remainder of hat, 2 sc in same st (place st marker in first st to mark as increase side of hat), sc in each st to last st, do not work in last st. Turn. 39 (44, 49)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st. Turn. 39 (44, 49)

Rows 4 – 76 (80, 84): Repeat rows 2 – 3. Once hat width reaches desired measurement, end after a row 2.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.  Weave in remaining ends.

Fold ends of parallelogram together, and with long end, sew together with mattress stitch using loop left from foundation chain and top front loop of last row. This side will now be the wrong side of your hat.  Sew top of hat closed. Turn hat right side out to finish.

To measure width of hat prior to sewing, measure along bottom or top edges:
