A crochet sampler blanket A Winter’s Night Rhapsody is a free crochet pattern by Nana’s Crafty Home!
My love for crochet stitch sampler blankets began many years ago. My first crochet stitch sampler design released on the blog was the Autumn Rhapsody Blanket which has been loved by so many and featured on the cover of Crochet Magazine!
And my last crochet sampler afghan – the Spring Rhapsody Blanket – was released over 2 years ago! Definitely time to design and release a new one.
The Winter’s Night Rhapsody Sampler Crochet Blanket will be released as a free pattern in a Crochet a Long (CAL) in 4 parts. What is a Crochet a Long? A Crochet a Long is basically a group of people working on the same project at the same time and at the same pace with parts of the pattern being released over a specific time frame. However, if you come across this project later you can absolutely work on this blanket any time as the pattern will remain free on the blog!
Crochet Sampler Blanket Details
I took inspiration for this sampler blanket from all the things that make me think of a cold winter’s night. Shades of blue with soft fluffy white snow and starry skies!
I used Paintbox Cotton Aran which is a medium #4 weight 100% cotton yarn. However, you could certainly use your favorite yarn as substitute – cotton or acrylic.

There are several crochet stitches I will be introducing in this blanket pattern and each stitch will have a complete photo and video tutorial provided to help you with each section of the blanket.
There is a lot of texture going on in this afghan pattern with the different stitch patterns. I am using bobbles, popcorn stitches, an interesting variation of the double crochet (dc) V-stitch and a fun pom pom border edge.
There is also a section of snowflakes and stars in the tapestry single crochet technique. Are you familiar with this crochet color work method? If not, I have a photo and video tutorial you may want to check out and practice to get ready for this blanket pattern. The I’ll Be Home for Christmas Red Truck Blanket uses this technique and would make another great tapestry project.
If you are familiar with my Autumn & Spring Rhapsody blankets I used an interesting stitch to keep from having to sew the flowers to my blanket. I changed up that method for this blanket but the good news is there is still NO sewing for the snowflakes and stars!
This blanket pattern is very versatile as well. If you wanted to make an all snowflake blanket you could skip making the stars and substitute with snowflakes. If you wanted a star blanket you could skip making the snowflakes. For the tapestry sections of the blanket you could repeat the snowflakes or the star sections a second time. That means you could easily mix and match and make 3 completely different looking blankets out of this one pattern!
I am also playing around with the idea of designing a star border to replace the pom pom border edging for those of you making a star blanket instead.
If you do decide to change up your crochet blanket pattern to all snowflakes or all stars you would need to make adjustments to your yarn needs.
