1. This crochet rectangle blanket is made from the center-out as a rectangle shape.
2. You can adjust your starting chain to make any size. To resize, chain in multiples of 2 for an even number of chains and learn How to make any size Crochet Rectangle with my complete tutorial!
3. I am using one of my very favorite stitch patterns for this beautiful blanket – the Interlocking Arched Columns crochet stitch. Since this stitch patterns is one of my favorite and most popular – it is also used in all of my Mountain Trail crochet patterns.
4. What makes the stitch so unique looking is that you are working a round of double crochets with skipped stitches and then the next round you are “dropping” your double crochet stitches into those skipped stitches – either in front of or behind the ch-1 space created from the previous row. I have a complete photo and video tutorial for this stitch which will help you crochet this blanket. Subscribe to my YouTube Channel to get notified whenever I post a new video.
Complete video tutorial is now available below. Scroll to the written pattern instructions at the bottom of the post!
5. Once your rectangle is the size you desire you will work one final round of single crochet stitches to tighten up that last round.
6. The fun pom pom edging is completely optional but I really love the fun vibe it adds to my finished blanket. However, I needed to find a way to make the pom poms removable for washing the blanket. I tried several different options but finally came up with adding toggle buttons to the short ends of my throw.
These toggles allow me to “attach” the pom pom around the toggle with the elastic bit from the pom pom. When I want to wash the blanket I can easily remove the pom pom from the toggle and throw the blanket in the wash! The best part – when the pom poms are attached you can’t even see the toggle! I could see this being used for scarves as well – an easy way to add a faux fur pom pom and still be able to wash your wearable!
This is of course completely optional and you could certainly add simple fringe, a double knotted fringe, or fun tassel border to change things up as well!

I needed a self-striping yarn with very short color changes and an extra bonus if the yarn had a mostly constant thread of contrast running through it. I finally found the perfect yarn for this pattern in Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek Print which is a medium worsted weight yarn. Available on Amazon: https://amzn.to/4jctBmh
However, I think this stitch pattern would lend itself well to a lot of different variegated yarns. If you have some variegated yarn on hand and you have been looking for the perfect project to let that yarn shine – grab a hook and try this blanket out!
My finished rectangle measured approximately 37″ x 40″ and I added toggles/pom poms evenly across the short ends of my blanket. I used a total of 12 of each – 6 along each short end of the blanket. You could also just add toggles and pom poms to each corner rather than along the edge or you could go all out and add them along the entire outside edge!
In order to evenly space the pom poms across the edge of any size project, simply measure the length and divide by the number of spaces you will have between the pom poms. With a pom pom at each corner and 4 pom poms in between = 5 total spaces. So for my blanket the calculation would be 37 ÷ 5 = 7.4″ between toggles. You don’t need to be that precise – simply measure a little over 7″ across to evenly space the toggles. Once you have stitch markers on end end, fold the ends of the blanket together and place stitch markers on the opposite end of the blanket to match.

Pattern Instructions
Ch 20.
Row 1: 1 sc in third ch from hook (place a stitch marker in sp from skipped chs) and in each ch to end. Turn. 18.
Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first st), 2 dc in same st (beg corner), *ch 1, sk next st, dc in next st,* repeat from * to * to last st, sk next st, in the sp of the skipped chs from the beginning work (3 dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, 3 dc) all in the same sp, now working in unused loops of beg foundation ch, repeat from * to * to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, (3 dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1) in last st, sl st in top of first st. (4 dc cluster corners + 22 ch-1 sps + 18 dc sts)
Round 3: Sl st in next st, ch 1, 3 sc cluster in same st (corner), [sc in next st, *working in front of ch-1 sp work dc in skipped st from two rounds below, sc in next dc,* repeat from * to * to middle dc of corner, 3 sc in middle dc, sc in next st, dc in ch-sp from two rounds below, sc in next st, dc in ch-sp from two rounds below, sc in next st, 3 sc in middle dc,] twice, omitting final corner, sl st in first st. (60)
Round 4: Sl st in next st, ch 3, 2 dc in same st, [ch 1, sk next st, *dc in next st, ch 1, sk next st,* repeat from * to * to middle sc of corner, 3 dc in middle sc] 3 times, omitting final corner, sl st in top of first st. (4 dc cluster corners + 30 ch-1 sps + 26 dc sts)
Round 5: Sl st in next st, ch 1, 3 sc cluster in same st (corner), [sc in next st, *working behind ch-1 sp work dc in skipped st from two rounds below, sc in next dc,* repeat from * to * to middle dc of corner, 3 sc in middle dc] 3 times, omitting final corner, sc in top of first, sl st in first st. (76)
Round 6: Repeat round 4.
Continue repeating rounds 3 – 6 ending after round 3 or 5.
Once the blanket is the desired size, work one round of sc sts around the outside edge of the blanket. Work 1 sc in each st around with 3 sc sts worked in the middle sc of each corner to complete.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Pom Pom Edging
Cut a long length of yarn approximately 2x the length of the short edge = 74” long.
Starting at corner, place stitch markers along shorter edge of blanket approximately 7” apart (adjust as needed depending on number of pom poms desired and width of blanket).
With long length of yarn, sew toggles in place at each stitch marker across length, running needle between stitch markers between stitches to hide length of yarn.
Pom Poms can now be attached to each toggle and removed for washing as necessary.
