I love how easily customizable square crochet blankets are – make the size of your blanket as small or as large as you want! Perfect for baby or as a cozy throw over the couch!

Crochet Square Blanket Pattern Details

I am using one of my very favorite stitch patterns for this beautiful blanket – the Interlocking Arched Columns crochet stitch. Since this stitch patterns is one of my favorite and most popular – it is also used in all of my Mountain Trail crochet patterns.

What makes the stitch so unique looking is that you are working a round of double crochets with skipped stitches and then the next round you are “dropping” your double crochet stitches into those skipped stitches – either in front of or behind the ch-1 space created from the previous row. I have a complete photo and video tutorial for this stitch which will help you crochet this blanket. Subscribe to my YouTube Channel to get notified whenever I post a new video.

However, I needed to make some adjustment to the pattern since I wouldn’t be able to use the same color work technique with this crochet blanket. In all of my previous Mountain Trail patterns I was able to drop the ends of one color, pull in the new color and then those yarn floats or jogs along the edges would be concealed with fringe or the edges would be sewn together to hide the floats.

With a center out square pattern any yarn floats would be visible on the back side of the blanket – a no go! And since I dislike weaving in ends I didn’t want to cut and bring in a new end every round. WAY too many ends to weave in for me but would certainly be an option if you wanted to go to use a longer self-striping yarn like Lion Brand Ferris Wheel or Mandala.

The Coastal Haven crochet blanket is worked in one color way with zero color changes between rounds. Which means I needed to find a yarn that would lend itself well to this stitch. The hunt was on! I tried so many different yarns but finally found one I was very happy with!

I needed a self-striping yarn with very short color changes and an extra bonus if the yarn had a mostly constant thread of contrast running through it. I finally found the perfect yarn for this pattern in Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek!

This yarn has a somewhat “tweedy” appearance with striping in short color changes! And I love the Melissani colorway as it really reminds me of a summery beach day – soft sand and waves of water all mixed and crashing together! These colors meshed together really created something truly special.

This yarn is a medium worsted weight yarn so you could easily substitute your favorite! If you find another perfect yarn for this crochet blanket I would love to see it. I am always looking for new yarns to recommend with this stitch pattern.

The tassels at each corner are completely optional but I think they add a touch of a boho vibe to this beautiful blanket. If you don’t love making tassels (I don’t!), I highly recommend the Clover tassel maker*. Really makes tassels so quick and easy!
