Crab Bucket Hat – Free Crochet Crab Hat Pattern for Kids

May 29, 2026 | Crochet patterns

If you’ve been looking for the cutest crochet crab hat for kids, you’re in exactly the right place! This free crochet crab hat pattern is part of my Summer Kids’ Bucket Hat series, and it is hands-down one of my favorites. It’s bright, cheerful, perfectly “crabby,” and just the thing to make everyone smile at the beach, the pool, or your next summer craft fair.

This hat is built on my Essential Basic Bucket Hat base pattern, and it comes in three sizes — Newborn, Toddler, and Child — so you can make one for just about any little one in your life. The base hat is all single crochet, which makes it great for newer crocheters, but the appliqués (those adorable googly cartoon eyes, rosy cheeks, and little claws!) take it to intermediate territory. Don’t worry though — it really is easier than it looks!

I’m releasing this pattern as part of my Summer Kids’ Bucket Hat bundle, which features eight fun designs: a sea turtle, crab, frog, dinosaur, shark, fish, blue whale, and orca. Most of these hats will be released as free patterns over the coming weeks, just like this one. (Psst — the whale hats are exclusive to the bundle, so if you want all eight, grab the bundle!)

Why You’ll Love This Crochet Crab Hat Pattern

Three Sizes: This pattern works up in Newborn, Toddler, and Child sizes, so you can make a matching set or just the perfect fit for your favorite little beachcomber.

Beginner-Friendly Base: The main hat is worked in simple single crochet rounds — if you’ve made the Essential Basic Bucket Hat before, you’re already halfway there! The video tutorial covers the full base hat construction.

Summer-Perfect Yarn: I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Red (with just a touch of Pink Lemonade, Black, and White for the face). Cotton yarn is breathable, washable, and ideal for warm-weather hats.

Simple Appliqués: The googly cartoon eyes, rosy cheeks, and little claws are all crocheted separately and sewn on — which means you can mix, match, and customize to your heart’s content. They also make great amigurumi add-ons if you happen to be making crab-themed toys!

Craft Fair Goldmine: Bright, bold, and instantly recognizable — this hat will be a crowd-pleaser at summer craft fairs. Make a few in different sizes and watch them fly off the table.

Video Support Available: Follow along with my Essential Basic Bucket Hat video tutorial for the main hat construction. The full video is linked in the pattern below. If you need any additional help I also have tutorials for how to make Cartoon eyes for Amigurumi as well as how to sew on appliqués in crochet!

Even though these Appliqués were designed for the child sizes you could certainly use them for a larger teen – adult size hat if you wish!

Assembly

sewing on appliques for Crab bucket hat

Assembly in progress — pin the eyes and cheeks in place before sewing for best placement.

1. Sew eyes to RS of eye base pieces, using long tails.

2. With WS facing, sew second eye base to front eye base. (This gives the eyes a nice raised, dimensional look.)

3. Using a long length of Black yarn, embroider mouth onto front of hat.

4. Sew cheeks on each side of the mouth, using long tails.

5. Sew assembled eyes to top of hat, using long tails.

6. Sew claws to each side of hat, using long tails.

7. Weave in all remaining ends.

Finishing

Your crab bucket hat is complete! Weave in all ends securely — those little crabs are going on adventures and need to survive the wash.
