Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton is one of my absolute favorite yarns for warm-weather projects. It’s 100% mercerized cotton — meaning it has a beautiful sheen, holds its shape well, and is completely machine washable. It’s soft against skin, which makes it especially great for babies and kids.

Tips for Crocheting This Bucket Hat

Before you dive into the pattern, here are a few helpful tips to make the process as smooth as possible:

  • Use a stitch marker — This hat is worked in continuous rounds (no joining). Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and move it up as you go. This is the best way to keep your count accurate.
  • Check your gauge — A 4-inch swatch should equal 9 rounds of single crochet. Gauge matters more than you might think for hat sizing, especially for the smaller sizes!
  • Magic circle — The pattern begins with a magic circle for a clean, tight center. If you aren’t a fan of the magic circle feel free to substitute with a ch-3, sl st in first ch to form a ring.
  • Count your stitches — After each increase round, count to confirm your stitch count matches. It’s much easier to fix a mistake a round back than ten rounds later.

The crown of this crochet bucket hat begins with a perfect round circle in single crochet. Need help? Check out my Perfect Circle in Single Crochet Photo and Video Tutorial for the perfect circle – every time! This tutorial will help you work up the crown of your hat – just follow the round counts and crown sizes for your hat size!

Getting the Perfect Fit

The sizes in this pattern are designed to match standard head circumference measurements, so for a true-to-size fit, simply choose the size that corresponds to your head measurement. That said, bucket hats are famously fun to wear with a little extra ease — so if you prefer a more relaxed or oversized look, I recommend going up one size from your actual measurement.

Want to customize the brim even further? It’s easy! To add more width (and flare!) to the brim, simply work one additional round of increases after the last round in the pattern, then follow it with 2–3 rounds of standard single crochet before finishing off. This gives the brim extra flare and length without changing the fit of the crown at all. It’s a great way to make the hat your own!
