The Sunflower Granny Square is a free crochet pattern by Nana’s Crafty Home!
The Sunflower granny square starts out as a puff stitch sunflower motif which is turned into a square. Perfect square for blankets, bags, scarves, shawls and wraps!
My love for sunflowers has been no secret and I have released many free sunflower patterns on the blog already. However, I realized I didn’t have a single sunflower granny square and knew I had to come up with something for you.
The great thing about this square is how versatile it really is. Originally I thought I would stop before squaring off my motif because it looks so amazing as is.
I mean – how gorgeous is that? You could certainly stop at this point and join several motifs together to create scarves, wraps, blankets or bags and it would look amazing!
However, I continued on to squaring off the motif to make joining easier and I am really happy with the end result. The motif center is still the central eye-popping focus of the square keeping an open and airy feel to the square as well.
Sunflower Granny Square Pattern Details
I used Knit Picks Brava Worsted yarn* which We Crochet had generously provided for a previous design the Desert Cactus C2C Blanket. Brava Worsted is an economical #4 worsted weight acrylic yarn with an amazing amount of color options.

And speaking of colors…you know how when you have looked at something over and over again it begins to look different to you? I began to doubt whether my flower really looked like a sunflower. So I decided to ask on Instagram and the overwhelming majority agreed that they saw a sunflower as well. However, several people also saw a mum, daisy and black eyed susans! I began to use up all my odds and ends of different colors of Brava Worsted including yellows, white and orange and made several motifs in the different colors. In the process photos I show below you see how the square looks in daisy colors – so pretty!
In a few days I will be posting the Fall Medley Blanket I made with this sunflower granny square using different colors of yarn. I think you are going to love it!
The Flower Medley Blanket is now available on the blog with a beautiful puff flower stitch border!
The most challenging part of this sunflower granny square is going to be the puff stitch for the flower petals. It may take a little practice to draw your loop up to 1 1/2″ as well as all the additional loops for the stitch. The rest of the stitches for this sunflower granny square are going to be fairly basic – single crochet, double crochet and treble crochet stitches.
I have a complete video tutorial for the Sunflower granny Square which you can view on my blog here. However, you can also find the complete sunflower granny square tutorial on YouTube as well.
I do recommend blocking your sunflower granny square before sewing your squares together. If you need instructions for blocking your crochet I have a complete photo and video tutorial for that as well.
If you are looking for a way to join your squares together I recommend the Mattress Stitch. The Mattress Stitch is a sewing method for an invisible flat join. Great for any project!
