The Santa Christmas Gnome Ornament is a fast & easy free crochet pattern at Nana’s Crafty Home!
I think I am just going to refer to this year as the Year of the Gnome at Nana’s Crafty Home (it even rhymes!). You may be familiar with my love of gnomes – the Santa Gnome Towel Topper and the Gnome for Christmas C2C Graphgan Blanket were both released earlier this year.
I wanted a quick project to use up some of my scrap yarn and which would look perfect on my tree and so I adapted the towel topper pattern slightly to make a smaller version and came up with these cute little guys!
I made a video for the Gnome Towel Topper and the hat is worked the same in seamless rounds just smaller and without the ring to hold a towel. You can find the video HERE.
These really do work up quickly and are perfect for raiding your scrap yarn basket as they use up very little yarn. You could even make one for your kids or grandkids in their favorite colors so they have their very own gnome on the tree!
I decorated mine with a plastic Snowflake embellishment button that I glued to the hat but you could certainly leave it plain or embroider a name or initials for the little ones. I found the flat button embellishments from Joann’s HERE*.
This pattern is also available as an ad-free, printable PDF! You can purchase the individual pattern, or if you love PDFs, you might want to check out my Lifetime Membership. It’s an awesome deal! Never pay for one of my PDFs again!! (Or, scroll down for the free version!)

The beard of my gnome is some scrap white faux fur that I cut in the shape of a beard and it turned out perfectly! You could have yours longer or shorter, less tapered – anything you want! I purchased the white faux fur I used for my gnomes from Joann’s HERE*. I used a super luxe husky faux fur but there are a lot more options available. And in store you can purchase a smaller amount depending upon how many you will be making.

Working with faux fur I found that you want to work from the back of the faux fur and cut from that side not the front. If you try to cut from the front it will cut those long fiber strands and it just won’t look right. I used a pointed and sharp blade which I used to poke through the back of the fabric and gently cut the fiber backing.
You have a couple of options for assembly. You could sew the nose, beard and button embellishment to the hat or you could use super glue to attach. Whatever works for you! The glue is super easy if you have it on hand – and they work up a lot faster.
You could also use these as pins or appliques – just omit the hanging loop and add a pin to the back so you can wear it.

Notes about pattern:
- Hat and nose are worked in seamless rounds
Hat (worked in seamless rounds)
Round 1: With Color A, 6 sc st in MC, place a stitch marker in the 1st sc made. Do not join with sl st to 1st st after last sc st. (6) Note: leave a long tail from MC as this will be used for the hanging loop.
Note: Continue moving up your stitch marker to the 1st st of each round.
Round 2: 1 sc in each st around. (6)
Round 3: 2 sc in 1st st, sc in remaining st. (7)
Round 4 – 16: repeat round 3. (st count = 20 at the end of round 16)
Fasten off Color A.
Round 17: With Color B, TURN, (now working on the WS of hat), ch 3, dc in same st, sl st in next st, *bobble in next st, sl st in next st* repeat between * * to end, sl st to base of 1st st from beginning of round.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
To make the loop for hanging, with long tail left from MC, tie a simple sewing knot by inserting needle in crochet fabric to create a loop of yarn, then inserting needle through loop of yarn and pulling tight. This will prevent MC from coming loose. Push needle down into top of hat, leaving a loop large enough for hanging, knot off again inside hat and weave in end.
Knot yarn before pushing needle into top of hat to create loop for hanging
Nose (worked in seamless rounds)
Round 1: With Color C, 3 sc st in MC, place a stitch marker in the 1st sc made. Do not join with sl st to 1st st after last sc st. (3)
Note: Continue moving up your stitch marker to the 1st st of each round.
Round 2: 2 sc in each st. (6)
Round 3: sc2tog 3 times. Join with sl st to first st. (3). Fasten off. Pull yarn through last st, sew yarn end through front loop of each of the 3 st, pull tight to close the circle.
Cut faux fur material to size desired for beard approx 2 1/4” wide at top x 2 1/2” long to tip. Taper cut slightly going towards bottom of beard. With embroidery thread, sew top of beard to bottom edge of the inside of hat. OR use super glue to attach to hat.
With a long length of Color A, sew nose to inside bottom edge of hat in the middle OR use a small dab of super glue to glue to bottom edge of hat on top of beard.
Sew or glue snowflake button embellishment to hat, if desired.
If you would like the hat to be more filled out, add a small amount of scrap yarn or poly fill to stuff and then sew or glue closed to secure.
So neat! Going to see if I can make some. Thanks!
