This crochet crossbody bag is a retro chic tapestry crochet pattern for the Chasing Diamonds Bag and is a free crochet pattern at Nana’s Crafty Home.
I love the look of geometric designs in tapestry crochet. And this new pattern is a simple design in just two colors that creates a lot of visual impact. And the Chasing Diamonds crocheted Bag is so very pretty, retro and yet so functional!
Crochet Crossbody Bag pattern details
Made with Lion Brand’s 24/7 Cotton* — absolutely my favorite go-to cotton for bags. This mercerized cotton has a slight sheen to it with absolutely fabulous stitch definition with 24 different shades to choose from. This yarn is strong and durable which makes it perfect for bags.

This crochet crossbody bag is roomy and is the right size for an every day purse. Would definitely fit all of your essentials.
I really enjoyed designing this crochet crossbody bag. This is the first time I have used this type of construction for the bottom of the bag — worked in rows rather than rounds — and I am hooked! I love how easy and oh so simple this technique is.
Once the bottom of the bag is complete, the sides of the bag are worked in seamless crochet rounds — which means no visible seams! The tapestry crochet rounds consist of an easy graph worked repetitiously around the bag to make the pattern easy to follow.
For the bag finishing the metal d-rings are easily crocheted directly to the bag with a simple button hole added for the toggle button clasp. If desired, bag could be lined and a zipper added rather than using the button.
I wanted a strap design that would mimic the lines of the diamonds running across the bag and chose to make a retro inspired chevron stitch strap. I love how this single strap looks when wearing it — especially as a crochet cross body bag! Really shows off the design. However, the strap is completely optional and you could choose to add a leather strap or another strap of your choice instead. Options aplenty!
Tapestry crochet is the art of working a graph with single crochet typically with multiple color changes. I keep the color changes to two in order to keep the complexity of design to a minimum.
If you have never worked Tapestry crochet previously — no worries! I have a complete photo and video tutorial for this fabulous color work crochet technique:
