Free Crochet Ear Warmer Pattern Details
The heart handband pattern is really quite easy as it is made with primarily double crochet and front post double crochet stitches for the main portion of the head band and then a round of single crochet stitches are added to the top and bottom as a simple edging.
The hearts are made by following a color work chart – changing colors as you go. I don’t like a ton of ends to weave in so because these ear warmers are not reversible I am simply carrying the colors to the wrong side of my work. Since you are working front post double crochet stitches you can’t easily work over the carried yarn, I simply float the non-working yarn to the next stitch that I need it. This color work technique would be very similar to working stranded color work or fair isle color work.

It may be easier for you to measure out enough yarn for each heart instead of carrying from heart to heart as I did for mine. Each heart used approximately 170 inches of contrasting color. I measured out the yarn and made little balls of yarn – you could also add the yarn to a bobbin which will help from getting yarn tangles.

I have put together a complete video tutorial to help you each step of the way – you will learn how to read a graph, how to change colors as well as how to “carry” or float your yarn carries to minimize ends. As an added bonus, the video has all the instructions for how to adapt the base pattern to make a cup cozy as well! For the video I am cutting enough yarn for each heart but you could certainly carry your non-working yarn across by floating it behind your work. Completely up to you!
The video walks through a heart cup cozy size for an added bonus! I have all the round’s color changes listed in the description of the video if you are interested in making some cup cozies for Valentine’s Day! Complete video tutorial + cup cozy directions in description of the video.
For my heart ear warmer pattern I am using Red Heart Super Saver* which is a medium worsted weight acrylic yarn. Very economical and with plentiful color options! You can certainly substitute your favorite worsted weight yarn – Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn!, Red Heart With Love, Paintbox Simply Aran, Vanna’s Choice, Big Twist Value, Caron Simply Soft, Caron One Pound and so many more! Raid your yarn stash – even mix and match.
For the main portion of the ear warmer I am using white and for the hearts I had a skein of really fun Super Saver Stripes in Retro Stripes. So fun, bright and cheerful!

- dc = double crochet
- sl st = slip stitch
- yo = yarn over
- FPdc = front post double crochet (see special stitches section below)
- sc = single crochet
Special Stitches:
FPdc (front post double crochet stitch): yo and insert your hook from front to back to front around the dc stitch post from the row below, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through remaining 2 loops.
Pattern Notes:
- Ear warmer can be easily resized by simply changing up hook size.
- Graph is worked as FPdc around the stitch in the round directly below, with the exception of the first round which is a round of double crochet.
- Each pixel of the graph corresponds to 1 FPdc (rounds 2 – 10) or dc (round 1) stitch.
- Ear warmer is worked in the round without turning. Slip stitch join at the end of each round into the top of the first FPdc, not the beginning ch-2.
- To work color changes, work last dc stitch before new color until there are two loops on the hook, pull in new color with last yo.
- To reduce ends to weave in, I carried the non-working yarn as yarn “floats” on the wrong side of the ear warmer.
- Ch-2 at beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.
