This functional, practical and so pretty hot pad would make great Mother’s Day gifts, additions to a bridal shower basket, a quick housewarming idea or a lovely addition to your own kitchen decor!

This free pattern for a quick hot pad would make a fabulous beginner crochet project with small amounts of cotton yarn.

Easy crochet potholder pattern details

This double-thick potholder starts with a 12″ crochet square with an easy to memorize stitch pattern and simple stitches.

The Interlocking Arches crochet stitch is worked in the round in two different colors. I used a solid white and then a cotton yarn with short stripes. I have a complete stitch tutorial to help with you with this stitch.

This stitch is a variation of the stitch used in my Mountain Trail pattern series as well as the Coastal Haven Blanket. One of my personal favorites!

Once your square is approximately 12″ in size, you will fold and then seam to create the double thick hot pad. Add a simple crochet loop and you are all set to go! I have a complete photo & video tutorial for how to make a hot pad from a crochet square to walk you through each step.

Since the back or “wrong” side of your square won’t be visible after folding and seaming the square, I simply drop and pick up my yarn colors as needed – no additional ends to weave in!

Ribbon Mosaic crochet square turned into a double-thick hot pad!

I am using I Love This Cotton! yarn in two different colors. I chose a solid white color and paired it with a bright self-striping worsted-weight cotton yarn. I recommend using a yarn with short stripes for the best visual impact. However, you could even choose two solid colors instead of a self-striping option. Using two colors with this stitch pattern provides a lovely mosaic appearance.

For my first square I used the self-striping yarn for color A and white for color b. This put the self-striping yarn in front of the white rounds so the white peeks through the arches. Then for a second square I switched it up to the white as the main color and the self-striping yarn behind the white ch-1 spaces. Which option is your favorite?

If you decide to make yarn substitutions, I do recommend cotton yarn for pot holders as acrylic yarn may scorch or melt upon contact with hot pots or hot dishes.

Pattern Notes:

  • Worked from the center-out as a square.
  • Worked in non-turning, joined rounds.
  • Chain 3 at beginning of a round counts as first dc throughout.
  • Corners referred to as 3 dc or 3 sc clusters.
  • Square is folded and then seamed to create double thick hot pad.
  • Do not fasten off yarn when pulling in a new color. Drop yarn and then pull back in with slip stitch to change colors.

Pattern Instructions

With Color A, make a MC (or alternatively, ch 4, sl st to form a ring).

Round 1: Ch 3, 15 dc in MC, join with sl st in top of ch-3 and tighten ring. (16)

Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in same st (beg corner), *ch 1, sk next st, dc in next st, ch 1, sk next st, 3 dc in next st (corner),* repeat from * to * to last 3 sts, ch 1, sk next st, dc in next st, ch 1, sk next st, sl st in first st. (4 dc cluster corners + 8 ch-1 sps + 4 dc sts)

Round 3: Drop color A and pull in color B with sl st in next st, ch 1, 3 sc cluster in same st (corner), [sc in next st, *working behind ch-1 sp work dc in skipped st from previous round, sc in next dc of previous round,* repeat from * to * to middle dc of corner, 3 sc in middle dc] 3 times, omitting final corner, sl st in first st. (32)

Round 4: Drop color B and pull in color A with sl st in next st, ch 3, 2 dc in same st, [ch 1, sk next st, *dc in next st, ch 1, sk next st,* repeat from * to * to middle sc of corner, 3 dc in middle sc] 3 times, omitting final corner, sl st in top of first st. (4 dc cluster corners + 16 ch-1 sps + 12 dc sts)

Continue repeating rounds 3 – 4 alternating colors each round until square measures approximately 12” x 12”, ending after round 3.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing approximately 50” in length.  Weave in remaining ends.

With WS of square facing, fold corners of square towards the center of the square. With long tail on needle, whip stitch front loops only of both edges together to corner.

Fold third corner towards center. Pull end of yarn through to corner between edges to join. Whip stitch front loops of both edges to center.

Fold fourth corner towards center of square. From center of square, whip stitch front loops of edges together. There is one final set of edges to seam. Pull end of yarn through to corner between final edges to join. Whip stitch front loops of both edges together to center.

Hanging Loop

With Color A on hook, insert hook into any corner of hot pad, attach yarn to corner with slip stitch, ch 16, sl st in second ch from hook and in each ch to end.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail. With long end of yarn on needle, sew end of chain to corner creating a loop. Secure and weave in end.
