Puff Stitch Crochet Blanket pattern

This modern puff stitch blanket is worked from the center-out as a square with self-striping ombre yarn.  An easy one-round stitch repeat creates interesting texture.  This crochet puff stitch baby blanket is fun and perfect for relaxing crochet time!

While the blanket is designed for babies, its attractive design and soft texture make it suitable for other uses as well. It can be used as a decorative throw or even as a lap blanket for adults.

Puff Stitch Crochet Blanket Pattern Details

This puff stitch crochet blanket design came out of my Remember Me Hat pattern that I released last Fall.  The Remember Me Hat beanie is now one of my most popular designs and I knew the stitch pattern would make a lovely blanket as well. For one of my hat samples I used Lion Brand’s Ferris Wheel* self-striping ombre yarn.  The Ferris Wheel yarn is has short color changes – perfect for smaller projects like a hat.

Since Lion Brand Mandala has been one of my favorite self-striping yarns for many, many years now I have a very big stash of it around the house.  The Mandala yarn is self-striping ombre but with longer color changes which makes it perfect for larger projects like blankets.  So I grabbed 3 balls in Wizard which is one of my personal favorite color ways.  Not really a traditional color way for babies but I absolutely love the bright colors!

The main body of the blanket is worked center out with the Interlocking Puff Crochet Stitch.

I have a complete photo and video tutorial for the Interlocking Puff Crochet Stitch if you want more details about this interesting stitch.  Subscribe to my YouTube Channel to get notified whenever I post new video stitch tutorials.

The main body of the puff stitch crochet blanket will be worked in turned rounds of crochet puff stitch.  The puff stitch of the blanket is worked as a one-row simple repeat.

I also have a complete video tutorial for the Mandala Pretty Puffs Blanket that you can find below or you can find it on YouTube. I walk you through each step of the blanket from beginning to border edge! I have a special trick I show you for how to create a join-free seamless edge with the half double crochet 3rd loop stitch as well!

This blanket is so easy to customize to any size – just work additional rounds to the size desired.  Since the puff stitch is a yarn eater it makes a great stash busting project as well. Using 3 cakes of Lion Brand Mandala which is a DK light weight #3 yarn for a total of 1,770 yards yielded a blanket size of approximately 33″ x 33″ square.  This might be a little smaller than you might like for a baby blanket so I would recommend 4 balls of yarn to get a larger size.

After the main body of the blanket is complete you will work a couple of rounds of hdc in the third loop – also referred to as the camel stitch. I love this simple border – a simple yet classy border without frills. Perfect addition to a unisex baby blanket.
