The Coffee & Cream Bag is a free crochet market bag pattern for a crochet market tote bag.
I just love to design crochet market bags – and I just plain love bags – ALL bags! The Coffee & Cream crochet Market Bag pattern is such a fun make – so easy and quick to work up. And I just adore the extra little details – a boho inspired tassel which is removable and optional and the cord straps give this bag a unique look with a modern update!
The sides of the bag are made with an updated twist on the traditional Granny stitch – the Granny Triangle Stitch is a fun stitch to add to your crochet arsenal. I have a complete photo and video tutorial for this stitch which will also help you take it to other projects as well – I really would love to see it in blanket form!
Instead of a traditional bag strap I thought 3 crochet cords would give this bag a modern and classy look and I wasn’t disappointed. If you need help with crocheting the Romanian cord I have a complete tutorial for that as well.
I used Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend yarn* for this crochet market bag pattern. I fell in love with this soft cotton blend yarn with my Triangle Trio Boho Vest as well as the Flower Garden Diamond Coasters. Such a soft and gentle yarn to work with and it is perfect for summer bags!

I think this bag is perfect as a market bag as well as a crochet project bag! The holes created with the Granny Triangle Stitch create an open feeling but are not so large that you will lose everything you put in it.
I recently purchased a handy little gadget on Etsy – the Quad End Fringe Twister – to create the twisted fringe I used as the hanging loop for my tassel and I just love it. So easy to use! You can certainly create a twisted fringe by hand but if you see a lot of twisted fringe in your future (and I certainly do!) you will get a lot of use out it. 😉
And if tassels aren’t your thing – add some beads for a unique touch! Check out the photo below from one of my pattern testers – Sandi used Lion Brand Flikka yarn (a sister yarn to the Comfy Cotton Blend) in Dill Pickle and Lion Brand Comfy Cotton Blend in Goldenrod. Instead of a tassel she added some cool wood beads to her twisted fringe!
I have created a couple of photo & video tutorials which should help you complete the bag – the Romanian crochet cord tutorial as well as the Granny Triangle Stitch tutorial. The Granny Triangle Stitch is the stitch I used for the sides of the bag and I think you are going to love it! I originally used this stitch for my Spring Rhapsody Blanket and I couldn’t wait to use it again! Subscribe to my YouTube Channel to get notified whenever I post a new video.

Fold 1 strap around each metal D-ring and attach to bag with stitch markers leaving 42 stitches between straps along top edge of bag. With long tail left for sewing, sew to bag using mattress seam stitch method.
Cord (make 3):
Make 3 cords using the Romanian crochet cord method as follows:
With Color A or B (make 2 cords of color A & 1 cord of Color B), ch 2, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in loop of skipped ch, turn, 1 sc in 2 loops just under your hook. Continue turning and working 1 sc in 2 loops just under hook after each st made until cord measures approximately 24”.
With tails left from each cord, attach cords to metal D-rings on both sides of bag. Weave in end through cord.
Weave in ends.
Make a twisted cord with 1 12” strand of both Colors A & B.
Using a 4” tall book or piece of sturdy cardboard, wrap Color B yarn around height of book approximately 30 – 35 times. Slip yarn off cardboard keeping the circle shape, tie end of twisted cord around the circle of yarn – knot end securely. With A 12” strand of Color A, form a loop on top of the tassel, wrap 1 end of Color A strand around loop and tassel approximately 10 times. Insert end of Color A into loop, pull beginning end of Color A until knot disappears under wrap. Trim ends of strand.
Trim ends of tassel so ends are even. Attach finished tassel to a metal d-ring.
