What yarn should I use for my crochet placemats?
Although a cotton blend yarn would typically be recommended for placemats as cotton yarn is very practical, washable and durable; however, since placemats will not generally be exposed to high heat there isn’t any reason you couldn’t choose acrylic as well. I have used acrylic yarn for my placemats and I have not been disappointed.
The nice thing about acrylic is that it is washable, durable but also color fast as well. The colors in cotton yarn can bleed with washing unless you have made the yarn color-fast with a vinegar wash.
The great thing about making your own crochet placemats is you can easily color coordinate with your preferred colors. Placemats are a great stash busting project!
Placemats come in many different shapes – circles, squares and rectangles! Rectangles and squares could be made on-the-bias or diagonally creating an interesting and unique look.
