The Gingham Bunny Placemat is a free tapestry crochet pattern by Nana’s Crafty Home!
So many of you loved my Gingham Bunny Table Runner and I had a lot of requests for the matching placemat. I just love how this bunny placemat turned out surrounded by gingham plaid.
This pattern is made with the single crochet Tapestry Crochet color work technique. I have a beginner’s tips and tricks photo and video guide if you need help with this wonderful crochet technique.
I also have a brand new tutorial that will help you add traditional Intarsia crochet color work techniques to your tapestry projects. Frankly, I will use Intarsia and Tapestry crochet techniques together in many of my tapestry projects. I will change up techniques using my best judgement for the specified project. For the Bunny Table Runner and Placemat I use Tapestry crochet for the gingham plaid sections and Intarsia for the middle bunny section.
Using different color work techniques will give the best finished results. When working Tapestry crochet you will carry your unused yarn through the row. When working Intarsia crochet you will drop and then pick back up in the next row. The bunny sections are perfect for using this technique as you are picking up your yarn in approximately the same area of the project so there is no need to carry the yarn creating bulk and color bleed through in your project.
My provided video will show you some tips and tricks in Intarsia Crochet to show you how to better hide the yarn as you pull it back up into your project. This isn’t strictly necessary for this project since there is a very obvious back side to your work – as long as you keep your yarn to the wrong side as you drop and pick up. However, practicing this technique will also help you create a good habit for any future reversible project.
The video will also show you how to pull in your yarn from a distance and how to work over the yarn as you pull it in. This may sound confusing but will become clear as you watch the video. I hope you find these tips and tricks helpful for you as you gain experience in color work.

I am using Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn! for this placemat to match the Bunny Table Runner. This is an acrylic medium worsted weight yarn. You may be wondering if acrylic is really the best choice for a placemat.
Shouldn’t I be using cotton yarn for a placemat? Why not use acrylic? If you place something very hot on acrylic yarn it may melt. This is the reason you don’t want to use acrylic yarn for hot pads – they will burn and melt upon contact with hot pans.
I would say that a plate or bowl would need to be quite hot to create an issue with acrylic. However, I would not recommend taking a hot plate out of the oven and placing it immediately on to an acrylic placemat. If you plan on your placemats being strictly decorative this will not be a problem at all. Acrylic is also washable and tends to be more colorfast than cotton with frequent washing. So, decide which one will work best for you.

Abbreviations:
ch = chain
sc = single crochet

Pattern Notes:
- Graph is worked in single crochet (sc) tapestry crochet technique. Each pixel of graph corresponds to 1 sc stitch.
- At the end of each row, turn and ch 1. Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- Since all sts are sc, the pattern is written telling you which color to use and how many stitches of that color. For Example: “[grey 5, white 5] five times” means you will work with grey color for 5 sc sts, then white color for 5 sc sts, and work that pattern 5 times total across the row.
