Wacky Waddles Turkey Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Nov 11, 2018 | Crochet patterns

The Wacky Waddles Turkey Hat is a free crochet hat pattern that is so fun, easy, cute and fast!

I recently released the Light Me Up Snowman Hat pattern and when I finished it I realized it would be the perfect base pattern for a Thanksgiving Turkey Hat!  I really love designs that can be reworked with just a few changes to make something that looks so different.  I see many wacky and wonderful hats in my future!

I have to say that my grandkids LOVE this hat!  Perfect for the young (or young at heart!) that love wearing cool and funky hats.  If your kids wear this hat to school you may find yourself buried in requests!

Now, the original snowman has a hat and you could certainly work the pattern exactly as written so that your Wacky Waddles Turkey has a pilgrim hat but I wanted to change mine up just a little bit and show a different option.

I wanted something really simple for the feathers so chose to do a small and simple chevron sample.  This allowed me to make the feathers as one piece and just sew that on to the back of the hat rather than making multiple feathers and having to sew them on individually.  This option is so much easier and really fun to make!

Simple chevron feather is so easy!

I have a complete video tutorial for the simple chevron feather which you can find here!

The traditional Thanksgiving colors I used for the chevron are really retro and very nostalgic for me.  Growing up in the 70s I saw a lot of chevron style afghans on the back of couches in those days.  I may be visiting my past again soon with an updated version of this chevron!

Sew the chevron to back of hat at round 15.

I used Loops and Threads Charisma yarn** which is super soft, comfy and warm for the main body of the hat but really any chunky size yarn you may have on hand would certainly work well for this project.

The hat pattern as written is fitted for an adult sized hat but this is so easily customizable to any size!  Simply adjust your foundation single crochet round to the size desired and work the increases/decreases as written in the pattern to finish the hat.  Simple!  Instructions are also given to resize the chevron feather if making a smaller hat size.

This pattern is also available as an ad-free, printable PDF! You can purchase the individual pattern, or if you love PDFs, you might want to check out my Lifetime Membership. It’s an awesome deal! Never pay for one of my PDFs again!! (Or, scroll down for the free version!)

dc dec = double crochet decrease

hdc = half double crochet

sc dec = single crochet decrease

sc3tog = single crochet 3 together (see special stitches section)

RS = right side

MR = magic ring

Notes about pattern:

  • Ch 3 and ch 2 counts as stitch at beginning of each round unless otherwise specified.
  • Hat is worked in the round from the bottom up.  Do not fasten off unless specified in pattern.
  • Pattern as written is sized to adult.  However, hat can be easily resized by adjusting beginning chain or fsc to desired size and working pattern from there with decrease and increase rows as stated in the pattern.
  • To adjust the size of the chevron for smaller hat sizes: starting chain is worked in multiples of 12 + 2.  For a baby/toddler/small child I would suggest a starting chain 24+2 and make fewer rows.  If making fewer rows but still desire multiple colors, make 2 rows in each color instead of 4.

Special stitches:

sc3tog = *insert hook into next st, yo and pull up a loop*, repeat between * * 2 more times, yo and pull through all 4 loops on hook.
