The Sunflower Christmas Tree Ornament is a free crochet pattern for a quick flower ornament or applique by Nana’s Crafty Home!
I love sunflowers so much – I just can’t get enough of them! You may already be familiar with my previous design, the Autumn Rhapsody Blanket which highlights my love of this beautiful flower. The basic design of the flower is the same as the blanket – just using a magic circle to create the sunflower center. If you would like to learn more about the Sunflower Stitch head on over to the complete photo and video tutorial HERE.
I wanted a quick way to brighten up my tree and this was the perfect way to do it – so quick and easy! You will love how cheery, bright and happy your tree will be with these flowers. A touch of rustic farmhouse charm with these ornaments.
So many color combinations possible – no need to stick with the traditional sunflower colors here – go with the color scheme you already have on your tree or make your tree a scrap happy with a combo of different colors. A great way to use up your scrap yarn!
I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton! yarn for my sunflower ornaments but you can use any yarn you have on hand – acrylic or cotton. If you are like me I just can’t bear to throw away any scrap yarn – even the smallest left overs – and this ornament would be perfect for those tiny amounts.

If you would like to harden or stiffen your ornament so the flower petals stay in place without curling, you can use a fabric stiffening spray or fabric stiffener that you can find at any craft store.

Scrap amounts of any yarn you have on hand in 2 different colors. I used the following:
Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton! Brown (Color A)
Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton! Curry (Color B)
Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
MC = magic circle
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
st = stitch
ch = chain
Approximate finished size: 3″
Sunflower picot: sl st in st indicated, ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, ch 3, sl st in same st.
Round 1: With Color A, make a MC, place 8 sc in MC, sl st to 1st st. (8)
Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st, sl st to 1st st. (16) Fasten off color A.
Round 3: With Color B, sunflower picot in same st and in each st around, sl st to 1st st. (total of 16 sunflower petals).
Fasten off leaving a long tail for a hanging loop, if desired. Weave in ends.
To make loop, using the long tail and your tapestry needle, make a knot at base of tail, loop yarn approx 2 – 2 1/2″ tall, knot other end of loop at base of loop, weave in remaining end.
