Crochet Plant Hanger pattern details
This crochet plant hanger pattern would be a great project for an adventurous beginner crocheter. This plant hanger pattern uses basic stitches throughout – double crochet, half double crochet, chains and single crochet stitches.
The base of this crochet plant hanger begins by making a star shape and then the star shape is continued throughout the remainder of the pattern and up the sides of the hanger.
Once the sides are complete you will work your straps in the last round. These are made by working long chains and then working a single crochet over the ring you will be using for hanging. Single crochet in each chain back to the top of the basket to work single crochet stitches along the edge to the next point and repeat steps. Easy, peasy!
For the ring you will want to find a sturdy functional ring which can be wood, metal or plastic. I enjoy using wood rings as they add a touch of boho vibe.
The small and large-sized crochet plant hanger fits most common sized pots. If you are looking to add your own size so its just right I’ll show you how to do that, too. This pattern was designed out of necessity to give my plants that much-needed light and clean up some table surfaces, it’s a great way to add some style to your home and plants.

The original pattern recommended Lion Brand Fast Track yarn which is now discontinued and no longer available so I wanted to find some yarn substitutions that would work just as well.
I worked up a sample in Bernat Maker Home Dec which is a bulky tubular cotton blend option. This is one of my personal favorites and is available through both Joann’s as well as online at Yarnspirations. Perfect for all kinds of home decor projects!
Cotton yarn is a good option for these pots as well as cotton is very durable. If you do decide to use a medium #4 worsted weight yarn and want a larger hanger I would recommend doubling up your yarn thickness and a larger hook size.
Following the pattern instructions for the large plant hanger and using the recommended hook size of L (8.0 mm) for my sample, the finished size ended up close to 20″ total in length from top to bottom. The wonderful thing about this pattern is that you can add smaller to larger size pots for different looks. I was able to fit easily a 5-6″ round pot all the way up to a 10″ diameter pot.
They work up so quickly, too! I was able to complete my hanging planter in less than an hour. What a fantastic last-minute project.
You could easily add fun features – tassels, wooden beads or fringe to customize the final appearance of your crochet plant hangers. So many different options!

Custom Size:
If you would like to make this hanger your own size you can do that very easily, lets break down how it works:
Building the Base:
First we start making a star pattern. You want to make the star so it fits around the bottom of your base. Crochet the never-ending star for as many rounds until the inverted peaks cover the base of your pot.
Building the sides:
Once you have the base sized for your pot you can begin building the star upwards to create the sides.
To do this you simply follow the same star pattern as you would to grow the star, the only change is you will replace that HDC stitch with a SC stitch.
Continue adding rounds to your star, replacing each HDC stitch with a SC stitch until your star comes up 2/3 from the top.
Adding the hangers:
The final round should have all SC stitches, and no need to skip stitches or keep count, simply SC in each stitch. When you reach the CH3 spaces you will add in your CH, connect it to the ring, and SC back down the CH. Be sure to place a SC in the CH3 space before and after your long CH.
Lets discuss the length of your CH. I personally like 37 chains exactly for the T-Shirt yarn. It makes my plant stretch to about 18 inches from the top. Depending on where you are hanging your plant you may want this longer or shorter. 32CH’s give you about 12-15 inches. Just keep in mind when determining your CH length that it will stretch considerably, here are a few CH counts for t-shirt yarn and the length you get from them:
32CH — 23in. from point of hang to top of pot
37CH — 27in. from point of hang to top of pot
If you are using a different yarn, simply CH until you reach your desired length. I would stretch the CH to take my measurements, as it will be stretched when a plant is in it.
Once you work your CH to the desired length just remember the first stitch working back down the CH will also be worked over the craft ring, making it nice and easy to hang.
