Beautifully textured and easy messy bun hat free crochet pattern at Nana’s Crafty Home!
A previous pattern, the Just Peachy Hat made with the Caron Cupcakes* used a modified dropped double crochet stitch. One of the happy outcomes of this pattern was that I fell in love with both the outside and the inside of the stitch pattern as it worked up in the round. In fact, I might say I favor the look of the inside even more than the outside! So, I just had to create a pattern that highlighted the inside of this wonderfully textured stitch.
This messy bun hat is made to be reversible so that you could wear it to highlight either side of the hat and the look is entirely different and unique.

Inside and Out Reversible Messy Bun Hat made with Lion Brand Jeans Yarn
I used Lion Brand’s Jeans yarn for the first time and I am in love with it! So pretty! The contrasting colors look so great together. Available in seven different colors there are many combinations to choose from. I see this as a very nice neutral yarn color option for men. The yarn is 100% acrylic, is very soft, and it has fantastic stitch definition so it works well in a project like this where I wanted the stitches to really shine. This yarn works up so well and would obviously look great paired with denim clothing. This will definitely not be the last pattern I design with this yarn in mind!
I have included video tutorials below explaining the modified dropped double crochet stitch as well as a video explaining how to do the ribbing with the front post / back post double crochet stitches.
In order to make the hat reversible, I cut colors instead of carrying the yarn row to row as I did with the Just Peachy hat pattern. It takes a little bit longer to weave in the ends but with a small project like this definitely worth the extra little time it took.
This pattern is designed for an adult but could certainly be resized easily. If you are resizing just make sure you start with an even number of chains for your beginning row.
