Fish Bucket Hat – Free Crochet Fish Hat Pattern for Kids!

Jun 19, 2026 | Crochet patterns

Oh friend, this little guy just makes me smile every single time I look at him! This free crochet fish hat pattern is the latest addition to my Summer Kids’ Bucket Hat Collection. With his big googly eyes, round little mouth, and those sweet teal fins poking out from the sides, this crochet fish hat is equal parts adorable and hilarious — and your little one is going to be the cutest kid at the beach.

This pattern is built on my Essential Basic Bucket Hat base — the same beginner-friendly, top-down construction I use throughout the whole collection. The hat itself works up entirely in single crochet, so if you’ve got the basics down, you’re already most of the way there. The fins, eyes, and mouth are simple appliques that get sewn on at the end, and I’ve written out every stitch so you can tackle them with confidence even if you’re relatively new to crochet.

I made this hat in Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Goldenrod — that warm, golden color is just perfect for a little fish! The fins are in Jade green, which gives just the right pop of color. Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton is my absolute go-to for summer hats because it’s breathable, machine washable, and holds its shape beautifully. Plus it comes in a rainbow of colors if you want to get creative with your own fish color palette!

Why You’ll Love This Crochet Fish Hat Pattern

Quick and Beginner-Friendly Base: The hat body is worked entirely in single crochet from the top down, making it totally approachable even if you’re still building your crochet confidence. No complicated stitch patterns, no colorwork — just simple, satisfying rounds that work up fast.

Intermediate Appliques with Full Instructions: The fins, eyes, and mouth take this hat from plain bucket hat to full-on fish character. Each applique piece has its own clearly written instructions, and the gold yarn spine embroidery detail adds a fun, polished finishing touch.

Three Kid-Friendly Sizes: This pattern includes Newborn (0–6 months), Toddler, and Child sizes, so you can make one for every little fish lover in your life. It’s perfect for craft fairs, gifts, or just because.

Made with Machine-Washable Cotton: Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton is not only beautiful to work with — it’s also completely machine washable and dryer friendly. Practical AND adorable? Yes please.

Perfect for Summer Craft Fairs: Bucket hats are a perennial bestseller at summer markets, and an animal character hat? Even better. This one is fast enough to make in multiples and eye-catching enough to stop shoppers in their tracks.

Pattern Notes:

Note: The base bucket hat is worked using the Essential Basic Bucket Hat free crochet pattern. Follow that pattern in Gold yarn for your chosen size, then complete the appliqués below to turn it into the Fish Bucket Hat.

Note: All appliqué pieces are worked flat or in continuous rounds. Pieces are assembled after finishing the base hat.

Even though these Appliqués were designed for the child sizes you could certainly use them for a larger teen – adult size hat if you wish!

  • Hat is worked from the top-down.
  • Work in continuous rounds, do not join, instead use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.
  • Fit Note: Sizes are based on standard head circumference measurements for a close fit. For a more relaxed or oversized look, go up one size. To add width to the brim, work one additional increase round after the final increase round, then add 2–3 rounds of single crochet before fastening off.
