Solid Granny Square Pattern | DC Square Crochet Pattern

Nov 16, 2024 | Beginner Crochet Patterns, Tutorials

solid granny square pattern made with all double crochet stitches makes this a versatile, easy, beginner-friendly solid granny!

Crochet squares are so versatile and can be used in so many different projects! You can join several squares together for blankets, scarves, hats and more.

This solid dc square is made from the center-out and worked in joined non-turning rounds. Squares make a fantastic scrap or stash busting project for using up all of your bits of yarn for scrap happy projects!

And one of my favorite things about this solid square is that the ch-3 “seam” is in a corner which keeps it a little less visible. Many solid granny patterns I have seen have the ch-3 in the middle of a side which makes it pretty noticeable.

This will be your favorite go-to solid double crochet granny square!

You will only need to know how to work a chain, slip stitch and double crochet stitches for this beginner square!

This solid granny square is a great option if you are looking for an easy square that doesn’t have all the gaps of a classic granny square. A great no-gap option for bags!

dc solid square process round 1 beginning

1. The DC Granny Square is worked from the center-out which starts from a ch-4 and then all of the stitches for round 1 are worked in the fourth chain from the hook (the skipped chs will count as the first st of the round). You could also choose to start with a magic circle or ch-4, sl st in first ch to form a ring; then work all of the round 1 stitches into the circle or ring + a ch-3 to begin the round.

2. For round 1 you will be working 4 ch-2 corner spaces with 3 dc stitches between the corners. Join with a slip stitch into the top of the skipped chains from the beginning.

3. Round 2 is the repeat round for the remainder of your square. Start with a slip st into the next st, then slip stitch into the ch-2 corner space. Work your corner which is 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in the ch-2 sp, work a dc in each st to the next corner and repeat around. So easy!

4. Continue repeating round 2 to the size desired for your square. You can make this as small or as large as you want!

5. This solid dc granny square is perfect for blankets, bags, scarves, cardigans, sweaters, and more!

6. Mix and match sizes for a fun, eclectic scrap happy project.

I have a complete video tutorial to help walk you through this easy square.  Subscribe to my YouTube Channel to get notified whenever I post a new video.

7. Wet blocking your squares would be recommended but not necessary for most projects. However, blocking your squares will provide the most polished finished result.

8. I have several recommended methods for joining your squares together once you have your squares complete:

Slip Stitch Join for a flat join method

Single Crochet Join for an easy ridged join

Braided Slip Stitch Join a flat join that adds a bit of texture and flair!

Mattress Stitch – sew an invisible join

You can use any weight or type of yarn for your squares! If you love worsted weight yarn pick that! If you have a lot of dk light weight yarn in your stash use that instead. Acrylic, wool, cotton – any type of yarn can be used for this square.

I do recommend that if you are making a project with multiple squares that you use the same weight yarn throughout your project so your squares will be approximately the same size with the same amount of rounds.

If you are blocking your finished squares I would recommend a blocking board as it makes this process a lot easier! I recommend this beautiful blocking board I picked up on Amazon.
