The Two Color Granny Square is a free crochet pattern and tutorial by Nana’s Crafty Home!
I have been immersed in all things granny square for the last several weeks; having just released the Granny Square Double-Thick Hot Pad and the Basic Granny Square Tutorial.

I have a brand new patriotic granny stitch blanket coming out with a patchwork quilt block feel to it and I needed to incorporate a two-color granny square to get just the right look. Basically a half and half granny – exactly one half of the granny one color and the second half another color. Enter the Half and Half Granny Square!
I can see a lot of this square in my design future as you can use it for so many different things! A great way to incorporate color and shapes – perfect for a patchwork color work granny blanket!
Two Color Granny Square Pattern Details
The two color granny square is a variation of the basic granny square. The traditional granny square is worked in non-turned rounds. However, color work with the granny stitch can be a little tricky in that you would either a) have lots of ends to weave in or b) end up carrying non-working yarn tapestry crochet fashion.Â

Carrying non-working yarn with the granny stitch is not ideal because you have spaces between clusters so that carried yarn is going to be very visible throughout your project. Not pretty! So, in order to change colors without a ton of ends to weave in, we are going to work in turned rounds.Â
We will start the two color granny square with the same directions as a basic granny square. With Color A, Â work the first two clusters of 3 dc stitches + 1 ch-2 sp. After completing the second cluster you will work the first chain of the ch-2 corner sp. Instead of chaining two to complete the corner space, bring in Color B with the second chain and drop Color A. Don’t cut or fasten off colors as you drop them because they will be picked up on the next round!
Then complete the first round by working another cluster, ch-2 corner space and another cluster in Color B. To complete the first round, ch 1 and join with a half double crochet to the top of the skipped chs from the beginning. That join may feel a little weird at first but you will see the method behind the madness shortly.

Now TURN to begin round 2.
Take a look at the first round. You have the start of a basic granny square in two colors; 2 clusters in each color + 4 ch-2 spaces (the ch-1 + hdc join counts as a ch-2 sp). This is the foundation for the rest of your two color granny square!
Going forward you will be working Color A on top of the same color from the previous round and Color B on top of the same color from the previous round.
Round 2 you will continue working with Color B until you get to the ch-2 space with the color change and you will change colors in the same way as before – ch 1 with Color B, pull in Color A and drop Color B. Continue the remainder of the round with Color A.
If you need a little visual help alongside of these the written instructions for the two color granny square, I have a complete video tutorial to help!
You can use any yarn you want for your half and half granny square – just make sure you are using the same weight yarn for both colors and that the hook you choose matches with the yarn weight.
