I modified the crocodile stitch to make it a little more open, elongate the stitch and add a point on the end so it looks a little bit more like dragon scales.  Don’t be intimidated by the stitch if you haven’t done the crocodile stitch in the past as I will have a complete video tutorial coming out in the next few days!

After making my Candy Kisses Triangle Scarf I wanted to use Red Heart Unforgettable yarn again as it has become one of my favorite yarns!  The vivid color combinations with this stitch are delightful, as well!  Unbelievably soft and squishable — very comfortable against the skin!

Stained Glass Dragon Scales Bandana Cowl 

Pattern written in US crochet terminology

Supplies:

1 Red Heart Unforgettable Stained Glass 3.5 oz / 270 yds

Size J (6 mm) crochet hook

Tapestry needle

Scissors

Approximate finished size:  

10.5” from top of cowl to tip x 14” wide

Gauge:  5 MCS rows = 4”, 3 MCS stitches = 4”

Abbreviations:

ch = chain

dc = double crochet

sk = skip

sp = space

MCS = modified crocodile stitch (see special stitches below)

st = stitch

sl st = slip stitch

Notes about pattern:

  • Pattern is worked from the bottom up without fastening off until end.  
  • Bandana portion is worked as chains at the end of a row and subsequent rows are worked in the round without turning.
  • If you desire to make the neck opening larger or smaller, chain in multiples of 7.
  • Chain 3 at beginning of row counts as a stitch throughout.

Special stitches:

Modified crocodile stitch (MCS) is worked around a “pair” of dc posts from the previous row:  working around 1st indicated dc post of pair, (dc, *ch 1, dc* repeat between * * 2 more times), ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, working around 2nd indicated dc post of pair, (dc, *ch 1, dc* repeat between * * 2 more times)

Row 1:  ch 6, dc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, sk 1 ch, 2 dc in next ch, ch 1, sk next ch, 1 dc in last ch.  Turn (4 dc + 2 ch 1 sp)

Row 2:  ch 1, sk 1st st + ch 1 (working around 2 dc post pair from previous row) work MCS around next dc pair, sl st top of last st from previous row.  Turn (1 MCS) 

Row 3:  ch 3 (counts as stitch here and throughout), dc in same st, ch 1, dc in center of MCS from previous row, ch 1, 2 dc in top of dc in left corner of MCS from previous row.  Turn (5 dc + 2 ch 1 sp)

Row 4:  ch 1, working around last 2 dc post pair from previous row, work MCS, sl st top of next dc st, ch 1, work MCS around next dc pair.  Turn (2 MCS)

Row 5:  ch 3, dc in same st, ch 1, dc in center of MCS from previous row, ch 1, 2 dc in sl st, ch 1, dc in center of MCS from previous row, ch 1, 2 dc in top of dc in left corner of MCS from previous row.  Turn (8 dc + 4 ch 1 sp)

Row 6:  ch 1, working around 2 dc post pair from previous row, work MCS, *sl st top of next dc st, ch 1, work MCS around next dc pair* repeat between * * to end.  Turn ( 3 MCS)

Row 7:  ch 3, dc in same st, ch 1, dc in center of MCS from previous row, ch 1, *2 dc in sl st, ch 1, dc in center of next MCS, ch 1* repeat between * * to end, 2 dc in top of dc in left corner of MCS from previous row.  Turn (11 dc + 6 ch 1 sp)

Rows 8 – 26: repeat rows 6-7 ending on row 6.  

At the end of row 26, chain 27, sl st to top of 1st st from beginning of row.  This stitch will be the first stitch of the MCS at the beginning of the row.  DO NOT TURN!

After chaining 27, sl st to first stitch of row.

You will now begin working in rounds without turning. 

Row 27: ch 3, dc in same st, ch 1, dc in center of MCS from previous row, ch 1, *2 dc in sl st, ch 1, dc in center of next MCS, ch 1* repeat between * * to last MCS, 2 dc in top of dc in left corner of MCS from previous row, DO NOT TURN, (working in chains made at the end of row 26) ch 1, sk 1st ch, *1 dc in next ch, ch 1, sk 1 ch, 2 dc in next ch, ch 1, sk 1 ch* repeat between * * to end, sl st top of ch 3. Do not turn.

Row 28: ch 1, working around first 2 dc post pair from previous row, work MCS, *sl st top of next dc st, ch 1, work MCS around next dc pair* repeat between * * to end, sl st top of last dc st.  Do not turn.

Row 29: ch 3, dc in same st, ch 1, dc in center of MCS from previous row, ch 1, *2 dc in sl st, ch 1, dc in center of MCS from previous row, ch 1* repeat between * * to end, sl st top of ch 3.  Do not turn.

Row 30:  ch 1, *(working around 2 dc post pair from previous row) work MCS, sl st top of next dc st, ch 1* repeat between * * to end.  Do not turn.

Row 31 – 32:  repeat rows 29 – 30.

Fasten off.

Weave in ends.
