The Pineapple of My Eye Baby Blanket is a delightful, eye-catching free crochet pattern that creates a soft, textured, and beautifully colorful crochet square baby blanket using self-striping yarn.
This design begins as a center-out square that grows outward in increasing rounds. The main body features an addictive one-round repeat that incorporates textured puff stitches (also worked as pineapple clusters in this pattern), giving the blanket a plush, bumpy dimension that’s both fun to crochet and cozy to cuddle.
The vibrant stripes emerge effortlessly thanks to self-striping yarn like Lion Brand Mandala Baby, which blends soft pastels and bold pinks, grays, and creams into gorgeous gradient layers—no need to change colors manually!
A delicate lacy border finishes the piece with elegant scalloped edges and a light, airy feel that perfectly complements the textured center, adding a touch of sophistication to this otherwise easy project.
Ideal for beginners to intermediate crocheters who want impressive results with minimal complexity, the pattern is straightforward. A complete video tutorial is available to guide you step-by-step through the entire process, making it accessible even if you’re new to center-out squares or puff stitches.
This blanket is not only an easy, relaxing make but also a stunning handmade gift for baby showers—full of whimsy, texture, and those irresistible self-striping color transitions that make every round a joy to reveal!

Getting Started – The Center Square
This blanket is worked center-out, beginning with a simple square foundation.
Round 1: Work a round of double crochet stitches into a magic ring (or chain-4 ring), creating 4 corners with ch-3 spaces.
Important note about corners: The ch-3 spaces give your blanket soft, curvy corners that resemble flower petals—perfect for the dreamy, organic look of this design!
If you prefer sharper, more traditional square corners (like classic granny squares), simply substitute ch-2 for each ch-3 in the corner spaces throughout the pattern. Both options work beautifully; it’s your choice!
Round 2 – Introducing the Pineapple Puff Stitches
Now we start the fun part: adding those signature pineapple puff stitches that give this blanket its plush, bumpy texture and adorable name! These puffs are worked with 9 loops on your hook for a nice, full, rounded puff , so it pops beautifully with self-striping yarn).
How to make a Puff Stitch (Pineapple Cluster):
Yarn over (YO), insert hook into the indicated stitch/space, YO and pull up a long loop (keep it about the height of a dc so the puff isn’t too flat or too stretched) 4 times → you’ll have 9 loops total on your hook (starting loop + 4 pairs).
YO and pull through 8 loops first (this creates the “body” of the puff).
YO once more and pull through the remaining 2 loops to close and finish the puff.
Round 3 – Repeat round
Row 3 continues with double crochet corners + puff stitches in the ch spaces from the previous round. Continue repeating until you have achieved the desired size!
Border
The border is a lacy long chain + picot which is so pretty!

Lion Brand Mandala Baby yarn is an absolute dream with this pattern! The self striping cakes make this pattern super easy to work up and with just 2 (!) cakes you get this lovely beauty! The lighter DK or size 3 weight yarn is a good match for the pineapple cluster stitch as well. I just let the colors flow on this one and I think this pattern is a good one for disguising the yarn’s color changes.
Any yarn in the Lion Brand Mandala line would be a great substitute – just pick your favorite color combo!

The best part of this pattern — the main body of the blanket is a 1 row repeat! No looking back at the pattern row after row on this one. I honestly could make a hundred of these blankets and never get bored with it!
