Crochet Rectangle Blanket in ANY size! So Easy!

Learn the formula for making any size crochet rectangle with this tutorial!

Learning how to create simple shapes is a fundamental crochet skill that opens up a world of possibilities in crochet. A crochet rectangle is an essential and versatile shape in crochet designs. Whether you’re making a lovely rectangle scarf, a cozy rectangle throw, or even pieces for larger projects like blankets and garments, being able to crochet a rectangle to any size is essential.

I have been asked so many times how to determine the number of chains to make a rectangle blanket in any size. After releasing the Coastal Haven Blanket square, many of you have asked for that pattern to be turned into a rectangle. The Sunrise Serenade Rectangle Blanket is now available as a free crochet pattern and tutorial!

I thought it would be a good idea to put this quick and easy tutorial together so that you can make ANY size crochet rectangle – in ANY stitch!

A rectangular shape can be used for more than just blankets, too. This formula can be used for a center-out rectangle shawl, rectangle bag bottoms, placemats, rugs, even wearables that start with a rectangle shape – think ruanas, cardigans and more!

Use this formula with any stitch you are using for your project – simply adjust for the stitch multiples required for your project.

If you want to try this method out, I recommend checking out my basic granny rectangle pattern. I am currently working on a beginner-friendly all double crochet rectangle blanket which would be so perfect for those that love making all things in all dc!

This technique will become your foundation for more complex designs, giving you the freedom to create exactly the size you want. I hope this gives you the confidence and inspiration to turn your favorite stitches into a rectangle shape!

How to Make ANY size Crochet Rectangle

 1. Choose the yarn and hook size for your project. Be sure your hook size matches with the size yarn you are using for your project. This formula can be used with any size weight yarn and crochet hook!

2. Choose the stitch you will be using and the stitch multiple needed for your foundation chain.

Example: If you want to make my Granny Stitch Rectangle, you would need to start with a foundation ch in multiples of 3 + 2.

3. Choose the size you want to make your rectangle.

Sample Blanket sizes:

  • Baby blanket: 30″ x 35″
  • Lapghan Throw: 40″ x 47″
  • Twin: 66″ x 90″
  • Queen: 96″ x 108″

4. You will find the foundation chain length by subtracting the width from the length.

Formula: Length – width = length of foundation chain

  • Baby Blanket: 35″ – 30″ = 5″
  • Lapghan Throw: 47″ – 40″ = 7″
  • Twin: 90″ – 66″ = 24″
  • Queen: 108″ – 96″ = 12″

5. Make a chain and measure the length. Place the chain on your ruler – do not stretch out the chain! Simply place and let it lie as flat as possible to measure.

For my sample I am using Caron Simply Soft which is a Medium worsted weight #4 acrylic yarn with a size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook.

How to measure your crochet chain

6. Count the number of chains you need for the measurement required. In the sample shown above, I would have 19 chains for a 5″ length.

7. Adjust according to stitch multiples required in your stitch pattern. If I were making the Granny Rectangle, I need stitch multiples of 3 + 2. So I need to adjust the chain number to that. In this case I would need to add a chain to start with a foundation chain of 20.

stitch multiple of 3: 19/3 = 6.33 so 6×3 = 18 + 2 = 20.

8. Begin working your rectangle!

9. To make sure you are on target for your desired size, I would recommend measuring after a few rounds to verify.

For example, if your baby blanket project measures 3″ x 8″ after three rounds and is growing by 1″x 1″ each round, then you should have a blanket measuring approximately 30″ x 35″ after round 30. Right on target!
