The Bijou Asymmetrical Poncho is a beginner friendly crochet poncho with a repetitive stitch pattern.  Simple stitches and easy construction combine for a fun and easy beginner-friendly crochet poncho pattern.

I especially love the beautiful drape on this poncho. So figure flattering – no matter your shape this poncho will fit beautifully and make you feel amazing!

The self-striping yarn combining with this asymmetrical style allows the stripes to flatter your shape.

Crochet Poncho Pattern details

This asymmetrical crochet poncho has minimal seaming. A simple rectangle shape is folded together and then seamed along the shoulder seam. So easy!  The easy construction of this lovely yet simple poncho makes this garment beginner-friendly.

For this poncho, I used a variation of the V-stitch – the Offset V-stitch for a lacy look.  The Offset V-stitch is beginner friendly using the double crochet stitch and chains.  This lacy stitch combines beautifully with Lion Brand’s Shawl in a Cake for beautiful drape and self-striping ease.

This free crochet poncho pattern is written in three sizes – S/M, L/1X, 2X/3X but instructions are provided to easily resize.

The Bijou Asymmetrical Poncho uses the Offset V-Stitch and I have a complete photo and video tutorial on the blog!

Yarn used in design is the gorgeous Lion Brand Shawl in a Cake which is a medium #4 weight cotton/acrylic blend that is light and easy to wear – perfect for layering. With a lot of drape and beautiful texture!  Unfortunately Lion Brand Shawl in a Cake is now discontinued but Lion Brand Shawl in a Ball* is still available and makes the perfect substitute!

One of my amazing testers, Julianna R. substituted Lion Brand Mandala yarn and it worked up beautifully! If you are subbing out another yarn – just make sure you can meet gauge as specified in the pattern. Her notes:

For the size L/1X she used 2 cakes, approximately 1180 yards, 300 grams, of Lion Brand Mandala (Light #3) in color “Centaur”. And although she was happy with the length she achieved she could have used a third cake – ending up with a few rows less than the pattern. She looks lovely!

If you are substituting yarn I do recommend a lightweight yarn especially for the larger sizes.  Using a worsted weight yarn could make this poncho quite heavy and it would have a lot less drape.  The drape gives this poncho a very flattering silhouette!

If you are a fringe person you could certainly edge fringe along the bottom edge.  I elected for the simple route here but I think fringe would add a fun boho vibe.
