The yarn I used for this hat is Lion Brand’s Vanna’s Choice. The colorway shown is Grey Marble which is part of the Heathers line of Vanna’s Choice. This is a grey tweed-like yarn with flecks of white brown and black which randomly “stick” out of the yarn giving the hat an extra little dimension. One thing to note, the Heather’s skeins have less yardage at 145 yards compared to 170 yards for the solids.

My hat is fairly tall at 10 1/2″ which helps the hat be very slouchy. However, you could make the hat shorter if you would like by just completing fewer rounds. If you are shortening, I would recommend you end on a round 5 or a round 9 which are the rounds you “close” your balloon.

Abbreviations:

ch = chain
st = stitch

fpdc7tog = front post double crochet 7 together (see special stitch instructions below)
sl st = slip stitch
hdc = half double crochet
ribhdc = faux knit hdc (see special stitches below)
RS = right side

Finished size:  approximately 10 1/2” tall x 9” wide laying flat.

Gauge:  14 dc sts & 10 rows = 4” (10 cm)

Special stitches:

fpdc: front post double crochet = when you work front post stitches you will be working around the dc post from the previous row and you will insert your hook from the front of your work to the back. If you are right handed, you will be working right to left across the row, and you will insert your hook into the right side of the post that you want to work around and then back up on its left side.

bpdc: back post double crochet = when you work back post stitches you will be working around the dc post from the previous row and you will insert your hook from the back of the work towards the front of the work. When you first insert your hook, the post that you want to crochet around will be sitting in “back” of your hook.

dc7tog:  work incomplete dc in each of next 7 stitches, yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook, ch 1 to secure st.

fpdc7tog: work incomplete front post dc over each of next 7 stitches, yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook, ch 1 to secure st.

ribhdc:  The ribhdc is worked the same as a regular hdc just in a different loop than a regular hdc.  In order to achieve the knit look in hdc, the hdc stitch is worked in the third loop behind and below the two loops that are generally used for a stitch.

Notes about pattern:

  • Working in the round, this stitch pattern requires multiples of 12 chains to begin.
  • Hat as written is fairly tall to make the hat “slouchy”.  However, you could certainly stop sooner to make the hat shorter and less slouchy.  I would recommend ending on a round 5 or a round 9 in the repetition as these rounds “close” the balloon you are working on.
  • Chain 3 at beginning of each round counts as a stitch.
