Stars & Stripes Crochet Head Scarf – Free Crochet Pattern

Jun 26, 2026 | Crochet patterns

With the Fourth of July just around the corner, I wanted to share a fun little crochet head scarf pattern that’s been on repeat at my house. This Stars & Stripes Head Scarf is a sweet, festive bandana-style accessory that comes together quickly and looks just as cute tied on your head at a backyard barbecue as it does around your neck!

I designed this one with scrap yarn in mind — it’s the perfect project for using up those little leftover bits of red, white, and navy cotton you’ve got tucked away in your stash. A handful of yards in each color is really all you need, which makes this a budget-friendly summer make.

This crochet head scarf pattern uses Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, my go-to yarn for warm-weather accessories because it’s soft, breathable, and holds its shape beautifully. The mini star edging and appliques add the perfect festive finishing touch, and I’ll walk you through every bit of it below, including links to my video tutorials if you’d like a visual helper along the way.

Why You’ll Love This Pattern

Quick to Make: This is a fast project! With simple repeating rows, you can have this scarf finished in an afternoon or two, even if you’re working on it in bits and pieces between everything else life has going on.

Perfect for Scrap Yarn: You really don’t need much of each color, so this is a wonderful stash-busting project. Pull those little leftover bits of red, white, and blue cotton and put them to good use!

Perfect for Summer: Made in lightweight cotton, this head scarf is breathable and comfortable for hot-weather wear — ideal for cookouts, parades, pool days, and everything in between.

Skill Level – Intermediate: This pattern involves color changes, an increasing triangle shape, and a star stitch edging, so it’s a great next-step project if you’ve already got some basic stitches under your belt.

Video Tutorial Support Included: I’ve linked tutorials below for the increase rows, the mini star border, the magic circle, and the mini star appliques, so you’ve got visual help every step of the way.

Three Sizes Included: Small, Medium, and Large finished measurements are provided, so you can make this scarf for yourself or for the little ones in your life.

This head scarf was actually born out of a very Kansas problem: it is usually just too hot here to wear a hat for the Fourth of July — even a lightweight cotton one! After I designed my Patriotic Bucket Hat, I kept thinking about how to capture that same red, white, and navy charm without all the extra fabric covering your head on a sweltering summer day. A head scarf was the perfect answer — it gives you that handmade, festive touch without trapping in any extra warmth, so you can still feel cute and patriotic even when it’s 95 degrees and humid outside. And if you’d rather skip the mini star appliques shown here, you can easily substitute my embroidered 5-point star option from the bucket hat pattern instead — just space your stars out along the navy band the same way, and you’ll get that same hand-stitched look.

Want a version you can wear all year long, not just for the Fourth of July? This same head scarf pattern works beautifully in a solid or self-striping cotton yarn for a more modern, everyday look. Simply skip the mini star appliques and star edging, and let the colors of a pretty variegated yarn do all the talking. Pictured here in I Love This Cotton in the Emerald Pine colorway, the sage, cream, and gold tones give it a soft, earthy feel that’s perfect for spring or fall — proof that this little scarf is just as versatile as it is quick to make!
