Crochet Sherpa Hat | Easy Crochet Beanie Pattern

Feb 13, 2026 | Crochet patterns

Winter is the perfect season to crochet something extra cozy and stylish, and nothing screams “ultimate winter luxury” quite like a crochet sherpa hat. If you’re searching for a fluffy, textured beanie that feels like a high-end faux sherpa accessory, you’re in the right place!

Introducing the Luxe Sherpa Beanie — a free crochet pattern that’s been inspired by romantic snowy vibes (think Dr. Zhivago elegance meets modern plush comfort). This two-tone beauty features a soft double crochet crown that transitions into a dreamy sherpa brim, giving it that irresistible teddy-bear fluff without any complicated techniques.

This cozy hat is perfect for beginners, too with basic crochet stitches throughout!

Why You’ll Love This Crochet Sherpa Hat

The Luxe Sherpa Beanie stands out because of its clever construction:

  • Top-down design using simple double crochet stitches for the crown — easy increases create a perfect slouchy or fitted shape.
  • Color-block style adds visual interest and lets you play with your favorite shades.
  • Fluffy sherpa brim made with Lion Brand’s Feels Like Sherpa (or similar fuzzy yarn) — you first crochet a dc “mesh” base, then add the plush loops using surface crochet. It’s surprisingly straightforward, and the results look incredibly luxurious!

This hat is quick to make, beginner-friendly, and perfect for gifting or treating yourself. It’s warm, soft, and turns heads wherever you go — whether you’re bundling up for a winter walk or adding a cozy touch to your everyday outfits.

  • Form the Crown: Begin with a magic circle or chain ring using bulky yarn and the smaller hook; work increasing rounds of double crochet (dc) stitches to build a flat circle, following size-specific increases, and check gauge for the circle’s diameter.
  • Build the Main Body: Continue with even rounds of dc in each stitch around to add height to the crown.
  • Create the Mesh Base for the Brim: Switch to a mesh pattern by chaining 4 (counts as dc + ch1), skipping stitches, and alternating dc and ch1 spaces around.

  • Extend the Mesh Height: Repeat the mesh round pattern for additional rounds to form the brim’s structure, then fasten off and weave in ends.
adding sherpa yarn trim to hat process
  • I suggest trying on your hat after the mesh rounds to verify fit and length. Subtract or add rounds of mesh as desired.
  • Add the Sherpa Trim: Using a larger hook and sherpa yarn, join to the first mesh round and work surface slip stitches (sl st) around each dc post with ch1 in between, repeating round by round across all mesh rounds to create the fluffy texture; fasten off and weave in ends.

I hope you enjoy your new sherpa hat!

This pattern uses two contrasting yarns to create that cozy color-block look: a smooth bulky yarn for the structured crown and a super-plush sherpa-style yarn for the fluffy brim.

Yarn Substitution Tips:

  • Crown: Swap with any #5 bulky yarn you love. Just match gauge for the best fit!
  • Brim: Any faux-fur or sherpa-style yarn works wonderfully. The key is fluffiness over exact weight.
The brim’s mesh base sets the circumference, so the sherpa yarn just needs to be shaggy/fluffy enough to cover it fully.

With these yarns, your beanie will feel luxurious and look magazine-worthy. Have fun choosing colors—let me know your combo in the comments!
