This free crochet pattern for my Whimsical Waves Summer Poncho was a lot of fun to design!  Featuring Lion Brand’s Feels Like Butta Yarn* which Lion Brand most generously provided for this pattern!  The Feels Like Butta line by Lion Brand is one of the softest yarns I have had the pleasure to work with.  Soft as chenille and designed to be worn close to the skin without any scratchiness.  With 18 different colors to choose from you are sure to find one that fits your style!  I fell in love with the Ice color I chose for this poncho.

Whimsical Waves Crochet Poncho

This poncho is airy and lacy looking worked in two separate pieces.  The front triangles are worked in an easy mesh filet and the side panels are crocheted directly onto the front panels with a lacy wave stitch that is a little more complex than my usual pattern but I have provided a video tutorial below for those that need some additional help with this fun stitch.  I think this stitch actually looks more complex than it really is especially since it essentially just a two row repeat!

As written, I would expect the poncho to fit most.  However, the poncho is easily customizable just by adding or subtracting rows to the side panels.   I used pretty much all of the 5 balls of yarn so if your gauge is different than mine or if you upsize the pattern at all you would need a 6th ball of yarn to complete your project.

The back (or front) strap helps keep the poncho on the shoulders and another strap could be added if you would like to wear the poncho a little higher on the shoulders.  Want to give your version a little more of a boho look?  Add some fringe to the edge and make it your own!

Whimsical Waves Summer Poncho free crochet pattern

5 Feels Like Butta Ice 17.5 oz / 1090 yd size 4 worsted weight

Size G (4mm) crochet hook

Scissors

Tapestry needle

Stitch Markers

Pattern written in US crochet terminology

Abbreviations:

ch chain

dc double crochet

dc dec double crochet decrease

yo yarn over

sp space

sc single crochet

st stitch

sl st slip stitch

RS right side

WS wrong side

Approximate size: 22” from top of triangle front panel to bottom of front triangle panel x 50” across bust

Gauge:  7 rows filet = 4”, 9 filet stitches = 4”

Size:  Pattern as written would be a one-size fits most but could be easily customized by adding/subtracting rows from the side panels.  If making larger, add rows 4-5 in repeats of 2 up to desired size.  If making smaller, subtract rows 4-5 in repeats of 2 to desired size.

Each repeat of rows 4-5 of side panel increases length of 1 panel by 1”.  You will need to duplicate same number of rows for second side panel so you will increase by a total of 2” for each increase you decide to do.

Special stitches:

2 dc dec:  work 3 incomplete dc over 3 st, yo hook and pull yarn through all loops on hook.

5 dc dec:  work 6 incomplete dc over 7 st, yo hook and pull yarn through all loops on hook.

Front panel: (Make 2)

Row 1: ch 4, 2 dc in 4th ch from hook. Turn (3)

Row 2:  ch 5 (counts as first dc + ch 2), dc in next st, ch 2, dc in top of ch 3 from previous row. Turn (3)

Row 3:  ch 5, dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 2, dc in top of ch 3 from previous row. Turn (4)

Row 4:  ch 5, *dc in next ch 2 sp, ch 2*, repeat between * * to end, dc in top of ch 3.  Turn (5)

Row 5 – 45 Repeat Row 4.  Do not fasten off and do not turn!

Side panel:

Row 1: (RS) ch 1, sc evenly down long side of triangle panel for a total of 116 sc.  If altering size of poncho, you will need to sc multiples of 6 + 2.  Turn

Row 2:  ch 1, sc in each st to end of row.  Turn

Row 3:  ch 3, 2 dc dec over next 3 st, *ch 7, 5 dc dec over next 6 st* repeat between * * to last 4 st, ch 7, 2 dc dec over next 3 st, dc in last st.  Turn

Row 4:  ch 3, 6 dc in 4th ch from row below* repeat between * * to last st, dc in ch 3 from previous row.

Row 5:  ch 3, 2 dc dec over next 3 st of shell below, *ch 7, 5 dc dec (work into last 3 dc of shell below and in 3 dc of next shell)* repeat between * * to last 4 st, ch 7, 2 dc dec over next 3 st of row below, dc in last st.  Turn.

Rows 6 – 27 Repeat rows 4 – 5 ending on row 5.

Fasten off

Work the following for each front panel:

Row 1:  With RS facing, in unworked side of both triangle front panels, sc evenly down entire edge for a total of 116 st.  Turn

Row 2:  ch 1, sc in each st to end.

Fasten off.  

With WS facing out, place triangles together, bringing side panels to sides of each triangle that only have the single crochet rows and place stitch markers to hold panels together.  Sew together using desired method.  I used the mattress stitch.

With RS facing, attach yarn with sc to top of poncho:

Row 1:  sc evenly around top edge of poncho, sl st to top of first sc.  

Row 2:  ch 1, sc in same st and in each st around, sl st to top of first sc.

Fasten off.

Strap:

Row 1:  ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in last ch.  Turn (2)

Row 2 – 20:  ch 1, sc in same st and in each st to end.  Turn (2)

Without fastening off, ch 1, sc evenly around outside edge of strap.

Attach to neck opening of poncho where desired.  I placed mine on the 3rd row of wave st edging of side panels on each side of the neck above the front triangle panel.

Weave in ends.
