Sampler Crochet Blanket A Winter’s Night Rhapsody Part 2 Details

Part two of my Winter’s Night Rhapsody sampler crochet blanket starts off with a bang with the Nesting V-stitch.  I am currently working on the complete photo and video tutorial for this stitch and I will be releasing that in the next few days.  I am going to try to make this stitch as easy as possible for you as it may seem a little complicated at first.

Nesting V-stitch section of the Winter's Night Rhapsody sampler blanket

The most important thing to remember with the Nesting V-stitch is that you are working V-stitches throughout – the variation is provided by the placement of the V-stitch.  The first row of V-stitches are your standard V-stitches – a dc, ch 1, dc all worked in the same stitch.  For the next row the V-stitches are worked over the V-stitch from the previous row into the same stitch you worked the previous one.

For row 3 of the Nesting V-stitch you will work the V-stitch into the ch-1 sp of the V-stitch from row 1.  Every row thereafter you will be working the V-stitch into the row from 2 rows below.  It may sound complicated but I promise the tutorial will help tremendously!

Working this stitch with different colors will also help you with this stitch – so much easier to see the stitches from two rows below when each row is a different color!  Honestly, even though I think this stitch is the most complicated of the new stitches offered in this blanket it has such gorgeous texture and looks so unique it turned out to be my personal favorite from the blanket.

Then you will be moving onto the tapestry crochet section.  If you are not familiar with tapestry crochet I have a couple of tutorials that will help you learn this wonderful crochet color work technique.

Tapestry Crochet Guide for Beginners

What is Tapestry Crochet? Tapestry crochet is the art of working with multiple colors to create graphic designs. The yarn colors you are not currently “working” with are carried along your work and picked up or dropped as indicated in the graph.

I also have another video tutorial which adds Intarsia color work techniques to your tapestry color work. Both of these tutorials will get you right up to speed and perhaps even open up a whole new world of crochet for you!

Intarsia Color Work Techniques

You can follow along with the written row by row instructions for the tapestry sections and I also have included the full color graphs if you prefer to work from that.

The fun part about this blanket is how customizable it is! If you want a snowflake blanket then do another section of tapestry snowflakes instead of the stars – or vice versa. It really is up to you!

Once you finish up the tapestry crochet sections, part 2 will finish up and then next week we will move on to Part 3 and the amazing star stitch!

Pattern Notes:

  • Ch 3 at beginning of each row counts as stitch.
  • I used a stacked sc stitch as an alternative ch 3 turning chain.
  • Stitch count will remain the same throughout unless otherwise noted.

Pattern Notes for Rows 47 – 67 & Rows 71 – 91:

  • Rows are worked in single crochet stitches in the tapestry crochet color work technique.
  • At the end of each row, turn and ch 1.  Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Written row by row instructions follow; full-color graph at end of PDF.
  • Since all sts are sc, the pattern is written telling you which color to use and how many stitches of that color. For Example: “[A1, C9] eleven times” means you will work with color A for 1 sc st, then color C for 9 sc sts, and work that pattern 11 times total across the row.
